In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), selected magnetic dipoles in a subject are aligned with a main magnetic field for later manipulation, and signals received after such manipulations are used to create image representations of the subject. One drawback is that even powerful magnetic fields can only align a very small percentage of dipoles in the region of the field. Electromagnetic radiation endowed with orbital angular momentum (OAM) aligns dipoles along the direction of travel of the radiation, but at a much higher percentage; as high as 100% of the dipoles in the region can be aligned. Resultantly, resonance signals emanating from the region are several orders of magnitude stronger than signals emanated using traditional MRI techniques. All electromagnetic radiation, including visible light can be endowed with OAM and used to hyperpolarize a region of interest.

Magnetic resonance imaging hyperpolarization of liquids or solids by light with orbital angular momentum

A magnetic resonance examination system comprises an RF-system for inducing resonance in polarized dipoles and receiving magnetic resonance signals from an object to be examined. A thermometry module dervies a temperature distribution of the object to be examined from the magnetic resonance signals. The magnetic resonance examination system further comprises a photonic-based hyperpolarization device with a photonic source for emitting electromagnetic radiation, a moder converter, such as a phase hologram to impart orbital angular momentum to the electromagnetic radiation and via spatial filter to select from the phase hologram a diffracted photonic beam endowed with orbital angular momentum for polarizing the dipoles via transferred orbital angular momentum.

MRI thermometry combined with hyperpolarisation device using photons with orbital angular momentum

One or more light beam endowed with photonic orbital angular momentum generating devices are mounted at preselected locations on an insertable instrument to hyperpolarize nuclear magnetic dipoles in a region of interest. The hyperpolarized nuclear magnetic dipoles are caused to resonate, generating magnetic resonance signals. A controller controls gradient coils to induce a magnetic field gradient across the region of interest, such that the frequency of the resonance signals is indicative of spatial positions. A frequency-to-position decoder converts the resonance signal frequencies into spatial positions. A video processor combines the spatial positions and a portion of a diagnostic image from a diagnostic image memory into a combined image which depicts the location of the region of interest or a portion of the instrument marked on the diagnostic image and displays the combined image on a monitor.

Active device tracking using light with orbital angular momentum to hyperpolarized MRI

An apparatus and method for electrochemical fluid analysis comprises a chamber () having a depth dimension for accommodating a volume of a fluid under test, first and second electrodes (A1) disposed within the chamber and extending along the depth dimension in spaced relation with each other, and a soluble solid, such as an annealed polymer, e.g. EUDRAGIT occupying a lateral gap between the first and second electrodes. The rate of dissolution as monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of the soluble solid within the fluid depends on the chemical concentration of a corresponding analyte present in solution in the fluid. In one embodiment a silicon-based integrated circuit device defining an upper margin includes an array of electrodes disposed along said upper margin to permit direct exposure of the electrode array to the fluid under test. The device is constructed using CMOS technology.

Method and apparatus for chemical analysis of fluids

A device capable of producing a high resolution chemical analysis of a sample, such as fluid, is based upon nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The nuclear magnetic polarizations of the sample are generated by sequentially illuminating the sample with a focused beam of light carrying angular orbital angular momentum (OAM) and possibly momentum (spin). Unlike in a typical NMR used for magnetic nuclear resonance imaging (MRI) or spectroscopy, the present device does not make use of a strong magnet.

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy using light with orbital angular momentum

A localization system to localize an interventional instrument in the body of a patient. The localization system includes an electromagnetic wave source which splits an electromagnetic signal into components propagating along a probe path and a reference path, respectively. The probe path includes a signal outlet for emitting the signal at the point to be located and at least one detector for picking up the emitted signal. A correlator is used to determine the correlation between the signal components that propagated along the probe path and the reference path respectively. Knowing the length of the reference path, the unknown distance between the signal outlet and the detector in the probe path can be estimated based on the correlation information.

A row addressing circuit and method for addressing multiple rows of a visual display in a single cycle. The circuit comprises: a decoder coupled to a plurality of signal lines, wherein the decoder includes a system for decoding a row select address, a first pre-write address and a second pre-write address and selecting three corresponding signals lines during the single cycle; and wherein each of the plurality of signal lines is further coupled to a dedicated set of latches, wherein each set of latches includes a row select latch, a first pre-write latch, and a second pre-write latch.

Circuit and method for addressing multiple rows of a display in a single cycle

A column driver system and method for driving a plurality of column drivers in an active matrix display. The system comprises: a register in each column driver for holding a pixel value; a system that generates a shared ramp signal for the plurality of column drivers; a system that samples the shared ramp signal for each possible pixel value; and a load characteristic correction system that adaptively adjusts the shared ramp signal in anticipation of a load error associated with at least one pixel value. The load characteristic correction system comprises: a data collection system that collects pixel data for each of the plurality of column drivers and determines a number of occurrences of all possible pixel values; a load analysis system that identifies error conditions based on the number of occurrences; and a signal modification system that determines a correction to the ramp signal when an error condition is identified.

Load adaptive column driver

A liquid crystal display (LCD) device includes a circuit for calibrating out non-linearities in the signal processing path from received digital input data to the analog voltage produced on a data (column) line of the display, and for calibrating out differences between column drivers and column lines in the device. The device receives digital input data and in response thereto generates an analog data voltage to be applied to a column line. The device includes a circuit for generating a precision staircase reference signal, and a circuit for comparing the precision staircase reference signal voltage to the data voltage and in response thereto producing a calibration data error value which is stored in the device. One, or beneficially all, columns of the device are calibrated by stepping the digital input data through each value in its operating range and storing the corresponding calibration data error values in memory.

Self-calibrating image display device

A reflective liquid crystal display (LCD) device includes a plurality of openings patterned in the pixel metal layer in the peripheral region of the device exposing the insulating layer beneath, a plurality of light-shielding islands beneath the openings in the pixel metal layer, and a plurality of walls formed on the islands surrounding the openings and extending substantially between the islands and the pixel metal layer. A plurality of spacers are disposed on the exposed portions of the insulating layer in the peripheral region for supporting the transparent (e.g., glass) layer above and providing a space for the liquid crystal material. The structure enhances display uniformity by making the spacers formed in the peripheral area more closely match the spacers formed in the pixel area of the device. The structure also prevents light from reaching the substrate in the peripheral region of the device and permits portions of the second metal layer formed in the peripheral region of the device to be used for signal routing.
