Detoxified but still immunogenic E. coli neurotoxin is prepared by bringing E. coli neurotoxin into contact with glutaraldehyde in mild operative conditions, the reaction being stopped where no more than 90% of the neurotoxin are inactivated. The obtained detoxified neurotoxin is valuable for immunizing piglets against oedema disease.

Vaccines against oedema disease of piglets comprising an effective amount of E. coli neurotoxin isolated from a culture of an E. coli serotype which is capable of causing piglet oedema disease and adsorbed on an adjuvant. The vaccines are administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous route.

Piglet colibacillosis vaccine for intramuscular or subcutaneous administration to pregnant sows comprising cell-free heat labile (LT) E. coli enterotoxin with an adjuvant and the method for preventing piglet colibacillosis consisting in administering said vaccine to pregnant sows from 3 to 6 weeks before farrowing.
