Systems and controllers providing air-path controls in combustion engines. Some examples may be directed to use in gasoline engines including a turbocharger, whether mechanical-only or including electrical assist) and a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation flow path. Control signals for a wastegate or variable nozzle turbine are generated from a turbocharger kinetic energy controller.

Air-path coordination in an engine

Models that employ both measurable engine parameters as well as predictable engine parameters may be used to determine when a thermostat is malfunctioning before the thermostat malfunction results in an engine breakdown. Particular models may be used to provide an estimated coolant temperature and an estimated thermostat position. The estimated coolant temperature can be compared to an actual measured engine coolant temperature. The estimated thermostat position can be evaluated with respect to what the thermostat position should be given a particular engine coolant temperature. In some cases, comparison between a healthy model and a faulty model may be used to ascertain thermostat health.

Systems and methods for controlling turbocharger operation by maintaining a virtual turbocharger speed calculation using airflow parameters in the context of an engine. An example uses a turbocharger speed estimator, an energy observer, and an energy controller. Optimization of turbocharger speed control, including avoidance of overspeed, while reducing wastegate actuation, can be achieved using a predictive control algorithm.

An engine system incorporating an engine, one or more sensors, and a controller. The controller may be connected to the one or more sensors and the engine. The one or more sensors may be configured to sense one or more parameters related to operation of the engine. The controller may incorporate an air-path state estimator configured to estimate one or more air-path state parameters in the engine based on values of one or more parameters sensed by the sensors. The controller may have an on-line and an off-line portion, where the on-line portion may incorporate the air-path state estimator and the off-line portion may configure and/or calibrate a model for the air-path state estimator.

An example engine system is disclosed. The engine system may control a turbocharger of an internal combustion engine, and more particularly control a boost pressure provided by a turbocharger to an internal combustion engine. An example method for controlling a boost pressure provided by a turbocharger may include receiving a boost pressure demand and identifying a compressor speed demand to achieve the received boost pressure demand. The method may also include converting the compressor speed demand into a kinetic energy demand of the turbocharger rotating components and controlling the kinetic energy of the turbocharger rotating components to meet the kinetic energy demand by controlling power supplied by the turbine and the electric motor assist.

Methods and systems for fault mitigation in an engine system. For ordinary operation, a set of control signals are generated after calculating airflows within the engine system using a set of flow models linked to components of the engine system, while underweighting or omitting an output of a sensor in the engine system. When a fault is identified, the set of flow models is analyzed differently by underweighting or omitting one or more flow models in favor of using the sensor output. By so doing, the engine system can continue to be operated without triggering an on-board diagnostic alert requiring cessation of operation.

Methods, devices, and systems for combustion resonance suppression are described herein. One device includes a memory, and a processor configured to execute executable instructions stored in the memory to receive a number of operating conditions of a burner, determine whether resonance characteristics are present in a combustion chamber housing the burner based on the number of operating conditions of the burner, and modify at least one of an air supply and a fuel supply to the burner upon determining resonance characteristics are present in the combustion chamber.

An optimizer is used to help manage a process that has multiple consumption inputs with differing costs, multiple production outputs with differing sale prices and intermediates. The process may have storage capabilities for some consumption inputs, production outputs and intermediates. Further, there may be multiple production and consumption targets for the total amount of consumption inputs/production outputs, consumed/produced over a fixed period of time. The optimizer finds the most economical solution while staying in a region from which the contract target is reachable for any combination of uncertain fixed trajectories from pre-selected intervals.

A device and method calculates and sends a manipulated variable via a network to control an actuator in a process. An indication identifying when the sent manipulated variable was applied by the actuator is received, and an applied actuator signal is estimated. Using a difference between the calculated manipulated variable and the estimated applied signal, a next calculated manipulated variable is corrected prior to sending the next calculated manipulated variable to the actuator.

A method and system include a distributed network of filters having a topology corresponding to an interconnection map of a process to be controlled, each filter modeling a sub-process of the process. Each filter is interconnected to receive an input vector of process measurements corresponding to a local state of the process and to receive process variables. The filters are adapted to determine a communication failure and responsive to the communication failure, correlations of the local state with the state of subsystems estimated by filters that are not accessible due to the communication failure are set to zero and wherein a local state covariance is increased.

A model predictive controller (MPC) for predictive control of nonlinear processes utilizing an EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) and a nominal trajectory generator. The nominal trajectory generator includes another instance of EKF, a linear corrector, and a time-varying deviation model. A nominal control trajectory can be predicted and an optimal solution for the time-varying deviation model can be computed based on an approximation of a system inverse known as signal de-convolution. The EKF can be utilized to estimate a current process state by supplying a measured output and to predict a future nominal trajectory by supplying a reference output. A Kalman smoother can also be utilized for the signal de-convolution in order to obtain enhanced trajectory estimates.
