Mats comprising a non-woven layer and a first polymeric layer on a major surface thereof. The mats are useful, for example, a mounting mats for pollution control devices, as well as thermal and acoustic insulation for pollution control devices and exhaust systems.

The invention provides a method of making a flexible and self-supporting insulating end cone liner comprising resilient and compressible non-intumescent material molded into a single, continuous piece having a three dimensional cone shape, with the insulating material comprising inorganic fibers and a binder, as well as a method of making a pollution control device that includes such an end cone liner.

Method of making self-supporting insulating end cone liners and pollution control devices

The invention provides a flexible and self-supporting insulating end cone liner comprising resilient and compressible intumescent or non-intumescent material molded into a single, continuous piece having a three dimensional cone shape, with the insulating material comprising inorganic fibers and an organic binder, and a pollution control device that includes such an end cone liner.

Self-supporting insulating end cone liner and pollution control device

A multilayer mat for mounting a pollution control element in a pollution control device is provided. The mat comprises at least one first layer having at least one lateral edge requiring protection from exposure to (i) mechanical erosion forces generated by the impact of exhaust gases passing through a pollution control device, (ii) high temperatures associated with the exhaust gases, or both (i) and (ii). The mat also comprises at least one second layer having at least one lateral edge that is capable of protecting the at least one lateral edge of the first layer. The width of the first layer is less than the width of the second layer. The first and second layers are stacked one on top of the other such that the at least one lateral edge of the first layer is positioned between the opposite lateral edges of the second layer. The first layer has an exposed major surface.

Multilayer mounting mats and pollution control devices containing same

A multilayer mat () for mounting a pollution control element () in a pollution control device (). The mat comprises at least one non-intumescent layer comprising ceramic fibers and having a width defined by opposite lateral edges, and at least one intumescent layer comprising an intumescent material and having a width defined by opposite lateral edges. The width of the intumescent layer is less than the width of the non-intumescent layer. The intumescent layer can have an exposed major surface.

The invention provides a preform insulating end cone suitable for forming the end cone of a pollution control device. The preform insulating end cone includes a cone shaped intumescent or non-intumescent sheet material. The sheet material has a plurality of slits enabling the sheet material to be cone shaped. A shape retaining element is in intimate contact with the intumescent sheet material. The shape retaining element enables the intumescent sheet material to maintain a cone shape. The invention also provides methods of making preform insulating end cones of the invention.

Method of making a polluction control device and a self-supporting insulating end cone

A pollution control device has a metal housing, a solid pollution control device disposed within the metal housing, and a mounting mat disposed between the pollution control element and the housing for positioning the pollution control element and for absorbing mechanical and thermal shock. The mounting mat includes a layer of intumescent material having at least one insert formed of a resilient, flexible, fibrous non-intumescent material. The insert is positioned along at least a portion of at least one lateral edge of the mounting mat to prevent erosion of the intumescent material and to provide a seal between the pollution control element and the housing.
