An improved process for chlorinating high density polyethylene 'in bulk' is described, with a two-stage reaction, the first at temperatures below the crystalline melting point, and the second above that temperature, and using a polyethylene starting material having a critical combination of characteristics, as described.

An improved process for polymerization of lactones or mixtures of lactones in the presence of an initiator and a catalyst is disclosed wherein the initiator is an organic compound having at least one non-cyclic ester group and having no reactive hydrogen substituents. A polyester having blocked end groups is produced.

Vinyl chloride polymers are chlorinated in a dry, two-step process including treating particulate vinyl chloride with gaseous chlorine at temperatures in the range of -20.degree. C to +50.degree. C, preferably 20.degree.-25.degree. C and without the use of radical-forming initiators or radiation for at least about 30 minutes, then increasing the temperature of the reaction to at least 70.degree. C until thermal radical formation occurs. In the second step the temperature is maintained below the point where the vinyl chloride is apt to agglomerate or discoloration occurs.

Process for preparing halogenated rubbery copolymers of ethylene, at least one other .alpha.-alkene, dicyclopentadiene and optionally one or more other polyenes is disclosed, wherein the copolymer is halogenated in the substantially undissolved or solid state with molecular halogen at a temperature of between -30.degree. and +80.degree.C. The halogenated copolymers produced by the process of the present invention may be covulcanized with strongly unsaturated rubbers to yield products which have excellent physical and mechanical properties, with reduced vulcanization times. The vulcanizates are suited for numerous applications including, for instance, car tires.

Process for the preparation of halogen-carrying rubberlike copolymers

A process for chlorinating solid, finely-divided ethylene polymers is disclosed, wherein the resulting chloropolyethylene has a statistical or hybridical distribution of chlorine in the polymer. The polymer is mixed with 10 - 100% by weight of water, based on the weight of the ethylene polymer, and the polymer is chlorinated with chlorine at a temperature which is above the crystalline melting point of the ethylene polymer during at least 70% of the chlorination period. The chlorination pressure is such that the boiling point of water at that pressure is at least equal to the chlorination temperature. The amount of water in the ethylene polymer is maintained at a level of at least 10% by weight based on starting ethylene polymer until the chlorination has proceeded at least to the point where the chlorine content of the polymer is 15% by weight. The resulting chloropolyethylenes are useful in applications wherein previous chloropolyethylenes have been used, such as for mixing with synthetic polymers to improve the properties thereof.
