Orthopedic devices are described including polymer compositions used to make the devices. The polymer composition contains a polyoxymethylene polymer in combination with various additives that prevent against agglomerations and spotting even when the composition contains significant amounts of coloring agents and/or waxes. In addition, the polymer composition has reduced formaldehyde emissions and excellent thermal stability properties.

The present invention relates to a molding composition, a process for manufacturing the molding composition, and molded parts obtainable from the molding composition. The molding composition can contain at least one polyoxymethylene having terminal OH-groups, at least one polyisocyanate coupling agent, at least one reinforcing fiber, and at least one formaldehyde scavenger. The moldings produced from the molding composition are distinguished by their improved mechanical properties while having low formaldehyde emissions and excellent tensile strength while having a good flex fatigue and creep performance.

The molding composition contains at least one polyoxymethylene having terminal OH-groups between 20 mmol/kg and 50 mmol/kg, at least one polyisocyante coupling agent, at least one reinforcing glass fiber that has been sized, and optionally at least one formaldehyde scavenger. The moldings produced from this molding composition are distinguished by their improved mechanical properties while having low formaldehyde emissions and excellent tensile strength while having a good flex fatigue and creep performance.

Polymer compositions containing a polyoxymethylene polymer are disclosed that are receptive to paints and ink coatings. The polymer composition contains a polyoxymethylene polymer having a relatively high functional group content in combination with a coupling agent, a texturizing agent, and optionally a thermoplastic elastomer. The polymer composition can be molded into various articles at a mold temperature less than about 125&#xb0; C., such as from about 60&#xb0; C. to about 120&#xb0; C. and then painted or printed with an ink composition. The polymer composition has been found to dramatically improve adhesion between the molded article and the ink or paint coating.

Polymer compositions containing a polyoxymethylene polymer are disclosed that are receptive to paints and ink coatings. The polymer composition contains a polyoxymethylene polymer having a relatively high terminal hydroxyl group content in combination with a thermoplastic elastomer. In one embodiment, a coupling agent may be added for coupling the thermoplastic elastomer to the polyoxymethylene polymer. The polymer composition can be molded into various articles and then painted or printed with an ink composition. The polymer composition has been found to dramatically improve adhesion between the molded article and the ink or paint coating.

VOC or compressed gas containment devices, such as polymer fuel tanks, are made from a polyoxymethylene polymer composition. The polymer composition contains a polyoxymethylene polymer that is directly or indirectly chemically attached to an impact modifier. In one embodiment, for instance, a coupling agent bonds the impact modifier to the polyoxymethylene polymer. In order to preserve the permeability of the polymer material when combined with the impact modifier, a polyoxymethylene polymer is used that contains a low level of low molecular weight constituents.

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of oxymethylene polymers as well as oxymethylene polymers obtainable therefrom. The process includes polymerization of a monomer, which forms &#x2014;CH&#x2014;O&#x2014; units in the presence of an acetal of formaldehyde or a polyhydric alcohol and an initiator for cationic polymerization. The initiator may be a heteropoly acid or an acid salt thereof which is dissolved in an alkyl ester of a polybasic carboxylic acid.

Oxymethylene polymers and process for the preparation thereof

Molding materials and the moldings produced therefrom, containing a) polyoxymethylene in which at least 50% of the terminal groups are hydroxyl groups, which has a melt volume rate MVR of less than 20 cm/10 minutes, measured according to ISO 1133 at 190&#xb0; C. and 2.16 kg, and whose proportion of low molecular weight constituents having low molecular weights below 10 000 dalton is less than 15% by weight, based on the total mass of the polyoxymethylene, and b) a thermoplastic elastomer, are described. The moldings produced from these molding materials are distinguished by a very high notch impact strength.
