An optical joystick for a hand-held communication device employs an image capture device for sensing movement of a stylus by capturing images of the stylus or a target attached to a socket receiving the stylus. The captured images are processed for tracking movement of the stylus so that movement of the stylus may be used for controlling functions of the hand-held communication device.

A hand-held communication device capable of being configured as a pointing device employs a camera assembly for sensing movement of the device with respect to a surface, or movement of a user's finger over the camera assembly, allowing the hand-held communication device to be utilized as a pointing device, such as an optical mouse or a trackball, for controlling functions of a computer system in communication with the hand-held communication device or of the hand-held communication device.

A hand-held communication device provides navigation key-based predictive text entry. The characters displayed by the display during text entry are arranged according to the probability of selection of each character for entry in the character position so that the character with the highest probability of selection is selected with a single input from the navigation key assembly.

A mobile communication device comprises a housing having a keypad assembly including one or more arrangements of keys for keying information into the mobile communication device. The keypad assembly may rotate within the housing either about an axis generally perpendicular to the face of the keypad assembly or about an axis generally parallel to the face of the keypad assembly for presenting different arrangements of keys to the user of the mobile communication device.

A mobile communication device includes a display assembly that may be extended from the housing of the mobile communication device to provide a larger display surface for displaying information to a user of the mobile communication device. The display assembly is movable between a retracted position wherein the display assembly is retracted within a cavity formed in the housing and an extended position wherein the display assembly is extended from the housing. The display assembly includes a display for displaying information to a user of the mobile communication device. A window is provided in the housing for allowing the user to view at least part of the display when the display assembly is retracted within the cavity. Information displayed by the display is mapped to the display so that the information may be viewed through the window while the display assembly is retracted within the cavity.

A multi-tier keypad includes at least a first circuit board having a first circuit and a second circuit board having a second circuit, wherein the second circuit board is disposed adjacent to the first circuit board, one or more first key assemblies for providing input to the first circuit when a first key assembly is pressed and one or more second key assemblies for providing input to the second circuit when a second key assembly is pressed. Apertures are formed through the first circuit board. These apertures allow the second key assemblies to extend through the first circuit board for providing input to the second circuit.
