A network is described herein which can control, through subscriber profile data and/or policy preconfigured control data, whether deep packet inspection for data flow/s for an Internet Protocol-Connectivity Access Network (IP-CAN) session established by an end user should take place, or not, according to a defined 'User Privacy Policy', and, in the former case, to which traffic detection function (TDF) node the data flow(s) should be directed.

Network node and method to control routing or bypassing of deployed traffic detection function nodes

At present, applying conventional policy and charging control in scenarios where a huge amount of users is supported, such as machine-to-machine type communication devices, represents a number of drawbacks, such as the amount of data to be stored in subscriber databases and the access rate, the signalling load, and the processing performance of nodes. The present invention provides for a method of policy control and enhanced apparatuses enabling the support of user community profiles that apply to a plurality of subscribers, the generation and enforcement of community policy and charging rules derived from the user community profiles and preferably installed upon establishment of a session for a first user. Further sessions to be established for subsequent users of the plurality of users would be enforced with said community policy and charging rules without needs for handling them on individual basis.

Method and apparatuses for policy and charging control of machine-to-machine type communications

The present invention faces the issue of authorizing transactional services by a Policy and Charging Control system. To this end, the present invention provides for an apparatus carrying out a method of authorizing transactional services and comprising: an authorization requester for submitting a transactional service authorization request with a user identifier and a transactional service identifier, and an authorizer for receiving the transactional service authorization request. This authorizer comprises: a PCRF server for authorizing the transactional service based on subscription and service data, an OCS for authorizing the transactional service based on credit authorization, and a decider for deciding service authorization for the transactional service based on the authorizations respectively made by the PCRF server and OCS. Device for low priority handling

The invention relates to a method for maintaining a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection between a Mobile Terminal (MT) and a Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN). Responsive to a detection at the PDSN that the PPP connection between the PDSN and the MT is inactive, the method sends a first Link Control Protocol (LCP) Echo Request, which including a Short Data Burst (SDB) parameter, wherein the SDB parameter indicates that the message is sent using SDB, from the PDSN to a Base Station Controller/Packet Control Function (BSC/PCF) for locating the MT. The method further determines on the reception of SDB parameter, not to setup a traffic channel (TCH) between the MT and a serving BS. Next, the method sends from the BSC/PCF to the BS a second LCP Echo Request, which includes a NO Traffic Channel (No TCH) parameter instructing not to setup a traffic channel for the MT.

PPP connection during simple IP

In an IP-based cellular telecommunications network, such as for example in a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 2000 cellular telecommunications network, a method, a system and a Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) for registering a Mobile Node (MN) with the PDSN. Once a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection is established between the MN and the PDSN, a PPP timer is started, the PPP timer being set to expire after a predetermined period of time. A Mobile Internet Protocol (MIP) registration takes place between the MN and the PDSN. The PDSN detects if the MIP registration is successful and if so, resets the PPP timer to a substantially higher value and the PPP session continues until one of the involved parties terminates it. If the MIP registration is not successful, the PDSN further detects if a new MIP registration request is received before the expiration of the predefined period of time, and if so, the PDSN resets the PPP timer again to the predefined period of time. Otherwise, if a new MIP registration request is not received before the timer expiration, the PDSN terminates the PPP connection. The PDSN comprises the PPP timer, an RP stack for supporting an RP connection, a PPP stack activated for the duration of the PPP connection, and a foreign agent for performing the MIP registration of the MN, which may be implemented using software or hardware modules, or a combination thereof.

Method, system and packet data serving node (PDSN) for mobile IP (MIP) registration of a mobile node (MN)

A Packet Core Function (PCF) and method of consistently selecting a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) from a plurality of PDSNs in a packet data network to host a data session for a Mobile Node (MN). In a first embodiment, a static lookup table in the PCF is used to associate a list of identifiers for MNs and a list of the plurality of PDSNs in the network. The PCF obtains an identifier for the MN and utilizes the lookup table and a hash function to associate the identifier for the MN with a PDSN. The PDSN is then selected by the PCF to host the data session for the MN. In another embodiment, the PCF also includes a cache timer and a cache memory that stores the identifier for the MN and the IP address of the selected PDSN for a predetermined time period following the handoff of the MN to another PCF. If the MN returns to the PCF within the predetermined period of time, the PCF reselects the same PDSN to host the data session. In another embodiment, following the initial selection of a PDSN to host the data session, the EP address of the PDSN is sent to the MN which then passes the IP address of the PDSN to any subsequent PCFs where the MN roams. A PDSN zone ID may be utilized in lieu of the fill IP address.

Packet core function and method of selecting a packet data service node/foreign agent in a packet data network

A method in a radio telecommunications network of broadcasting data in an over-the-air multicast to a group of mobile terminals. Statistics from regular point-to-point cellular transmissions to build a statistical database for each base station. The statistical data indicate the optimal signal quality that users normally experience when operating in that cell. From this data, a minimum transmission quality (TQmin) that a mobile terminal must receive for the type of data being broadcast is determined. The method then broadcasts a test transmission to the mobile terminals, and includes a maximum transmission quality (TQmax) in order to limit the number of responses. A response is then received from a mobile terminal representative of the group, the response including an indication of the received transmission quality. The method then determines whether the received transmission quality was greater than or equal to TQmin. If the received transmission quality was greater than or equal to TQmin, the data is broadcast in the over-the-air multicast to the group of mobile terminals.

Method of broadcasting a quality over-the-air multicast

A method of sharing capabilities information between a plurality of nodes in a telecommunications network. The method begins when a new node is installed in the telecommunications network or the capabilities of a node are modified. The new or modified node sends an Exchange Data Directive (EXDATADIR) Invoke message to one or more cooperating nodes in the network. The EXDATADIR message is an intersystem node capabilities declaration message which includes parameters relating to communications capabilities and service support capabilities of the new or modified node. If the node is a new node, this is followed by sending EXDATADIR Return Result messages from each cooperating node to the new node. The EXDATADIR Return Result message is an intersystem node capabilities declaration message which includes parameters relating to services supported by the cooperating nodes. Upon receipt of a node capabilities declaration message, each node updates its exchange data with the parameters relating to the capabilities of the other nodes in the network.

Methods of sharing capabilities information between the nodes of telecommunications network

A system and method of performing presence verification for a multiple-hyperband mobile station in a candidate cell for handoff in a multiple-hyperband cellular telecommunications network. The network includes a mobile switching center (MSC) and a plurality of cells, each of which operates in one of a plurality of hyperbands. A single verification device such as a location and verification module (LVM) is installed in each cell in the cellular network, each LVM operating in the cell's allocated hyperband. When a verification request is generated, the system determines whether the candidate cell has an LVM in the hyperband in which the mobile station is operating. If not, the system determines whether the candidate cell has an overlaid cell, and whether the overlaid cell has an LVM operating in the hyperband in which the mobile station is operating. If so, the system then utilizes the LVM of the overlaid cell to verify the presence of the mobile station in the candidate cell. The verification results are then reported to the MSC.
