Various embodiments disclosed relate to an abrasive article. The abrasive article includes a nonwoven web. The non-woven web includes a first irregular major surface and an opposite second irregular major surface. The nonwoven web further includes a fiber component comprising staple fibers having a linear density ranging from about 50 denier to about 2000 denier and a crimp index value ranging from about 15% to about 60%. The nonwoven web further includes a binder dispensed on the fiber component and abrasive particles dispersed throughout the nonwoven web.

An abrasive article includes a backing, abrasive particles secured to the backing, and a size coat provided over the abrasive particles, the size coat comprises a binder resin, at least one filler material and at least one lubricant material having a melting temperature of at least about 200 degrees F. A method of grinding aluminum using such an abrasive article is also described.

Magnetizable abrasive particles are described comprising ceramic particles having outer surfaces comprising a coating of unsintered polyion and magnetic particles bonded to the polyion. In favored embodiments, the magnetic particles have a magnetic saturation of at least 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 or 50 emu/gram. In another embodiment, an abrasive article is described comprising a plurality of magnetizable abrasive particles as described herein retained in a binder material. Abrasive articles including a nonwoven fibrous substrate having a plurality of fibers, and a multiplicity of shaped abrasive particles, each shaped abrasive particle adhered to a corresponding fiber, each shaped abrasive particle having a length (L) and a width (W) determined in a direction substantially orthogonal to the length, the ratio of the length to the width defining an aspect ratio (L/W) of at least 1.1, each abrasive particle is oriented relative to its corresponding fiber, and more than 50% of the abrasive particles are oriented with respect to their corresponding fiber such that the abrasive particle length extends generally outwardly away from a surface of the corresponding fiber as determined visually using the Orientation Test. The shaped abrasive particles may have the geometric shape of a polygonal prism having two faces and at least three sides thereon. Methods of making the abrasive articles are also disclosed.

Nonwoven abrasive articles having electrostatically-oriented abrasive particles and methods of making same

In some examples, an abrasive particle transfer system including a production tool including a dispensing surface with a plurality of cavities formed therein; abrasive particles removably disposed within at least some of the cavities; and a nonwoven substrate having an outer surface opposing the dispensing surface of the production tool, wherein the dispending surface of the production tool is configured to apply a compressive force to the outer surface of the nonwoven substrate to compress the nonwoven substrate from a first thickness to a second thickness, wherein, while the nonwoven substrate is compressed to the second thickness by the production tool, the abrasive particles are transferred from the plurality of cavities to the nonwoven substrate.

Abrasive article and method of making the same

A magnetizable abrasive particle comprises a ceramic body having an outer surface and a magnetizable layer disposed on a portion, but not the entirety, of the outer surface. The ceramic body comprises a platelet having two opposed major facets connected to each other by a plurality of side facets. The magnetizable layer completely covers one of the two opposed major facets, and the magnetizable layer has a magnetic dipole oriented perpendicular or parallel to the facet which it completely covers. A plurality of the magnetizable abrasive particles, and abrasive articles including them are also disclosed. Methods of making the foregoing are also disclosed.

A method of making magnetizable abrasive particles includes: moistening the outer surfaces of ceramic particles with waterglass to provide moistened ceramic particles. Magnetizable particles are contacted with the moistened ceramic particles to provide powder-coated ceramic particles. The powder-coated ceramic particles are heated to at least a temperature sufficient to bond the magnetizable particles of the powder-coated ceramic particles to the respective ceramic particles thereby providing the magnetizable abrasive particles. On a respective basis, each magnetizable abrasive particle comprises a respective ceramic particle having a magnetizable particles bonded thereto.

A nonwoven abrasive article includes a lofty open nonwoven fiber web comprising entangled fibers; and abrasive platelets secured to the entangled fibers by at least one binder material. A majority of the abrasive platelets are respectively bonded in an edge-wise manner to at least one of the entangled fibers. Methods of making the nonwoven abrasive article and converted forms, including a convolute abrasive wheel, are also disclosed.

A nonwoven abrasive article includes: a lofty open nonwoven fiber web, an abrasive layer bonded to the lofty open nonwoven fiber web, and a peripheral antiloading composition disposed on the abrasive layer. The peripheral antiloading composition comprises at least 50 percent by weight of wax having a melting point onset of from 180&#xb0; F. (82&#xb0; C.) to 290&#xb0; F. (143&#xb0; C.). A method of abrading a workpiece using the nonwoven abrasive article is also disclosed.

A method of applying particles to a backing having a make layer on one of the backing's opposed major surfaces. The method including the steps of: supporting the particles on a feeding member having a feeding surface such that the particles settle into one or more layers on the feeding surface; the feeding surface and the backing being arranged in a non-parallel manner; and translating the particles from the feeding surface to the backing and attaching the particles to the make layer by an electrostatic force.

A self-contained fibrous buffing article including at least one layer of a fibrous nonwoven fabric; the nonwoven fabric having a hardened adherent coating including a crosslinked binder, abrasive particles, and a lubricant blend; and the lubricant blend including at least a fatty acid, mineral oil and glycerin.

Disclosed is a method of applying particles to a coated backing. A first layer of particles is created over a second layer of particles on a support surface and the first layer of particles is different in at least one property from the second layer of particles. A coated backing is positioned above the first and second layer of particles. An electrostatic field is applied simultaneously to the first and second layer of particles such that the first layer of particles closer to the coated backing are preferentially attracted to the coated backing first before the second layer of particles.
