Thermoplastic molding compositions comprising blends of a block polysiloxane--polycarbonate copolymer and a polyamide resin are useful for extruding articles such as films.

Copolymers comprising amide units and ester units are prepared by melt phase interchange of diaryl esters of dicarboxylic acids and diamines with dihydric alcohols and diesters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The products are tough resins, useful per se as molding compounds, and to compatibilize and toughen other thermoplastic polymers.

Amide-ester copolymers and process for the preparation thereof

Thermoplastic resins of enhanced solvent resistance especially useful for packaging or automotive parts comprising blends of amorphous polyamides with a thermoplastic polyester resin, substantially free of a polyarylate have excellent physical properties and barrier resistance to oxygen and carbon dioxide. Preferred blends comprise polyesters prepared by reacting a dihydric alcohol with a dicarboxylic acid, and amorphous polyamides prepared from non-symmetric monomers comprising odd-number chain diamines and diacids, and meta aromatic diamines and diacids.

Described herein are amorphous thermoplastic terpolymers containing units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, or C.sub.4 to C.sub.8 cycloalkyl, a is an integer of 0 to 4 and n is independently an integer of 1 to 3. The units are attached to each other by an --0-- bond. These polymers have an excellent combination of mechanical properties. They display high notched izod impact values, high heat distortion temperatures and excellent environmental stress crack resistance.

Aromatic amorphous thermoplastic polymers

This invention is directed to novel crystalline chain extended polymers containing segments of crystalline poly(aryl ether ketones). The novel materials are easy to prepare and display excellent toughness, fabricability and very good high temperature and solvent resistance.

Polymer compositions comprise a polyphenylene ether resin and a plasticizer of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is selected from the group consisting CH.sub.2, O and S; Y is different from X and is selected from the group consisting of CH.sub.2, O, CO, S, SO and SO.sub.2 ; Ar is an aromatic ring; Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are individually selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkoxide, aryl, aryl oxide, nitrile and nitro groups; R is hydrogen or an alkyl group; m is from 0 to 3; n is from 1 to about 10; and a and b are individually from 0 to 4; provided that both X and Y are not simultaneously oxygen. The compositions may further include a polystyrene resin, for example, a rubber-modified polystryene resin.

Plasticized polyphenylene ether compositions

Polycarbonate and polyarylate resins are chain-terminated with a group selected from those of the formula: ##STR1## wherein each R independently represents one of hydrogen or lower alkyl. The resins are reactive polycarbonates, poly(ester carbonates) and polyarylates, useful as intermediates in the preparation of block and graft copolymers, with other polymers having functional, reactive groups.

Injection-moldable copolyesters of terephthalate units, ethylene units and a high proportion (e.g. 82-87) mole %) of oxybenzoate units, and cookware made of such copolyesters. Process for making such copolyesters by reacting polyethylene terephthalate with p-acetoxybenzoic acid in a solvent, first at a temperature below 240.degree. C. to product a fragmented polyester, raising the temperature to split off acetic acid, then adding more acetoxybenzoic acid to raise the oxybenzoate content to more than 80 mole %.

Copolyesters

This invention relates to moldable polyarylates and in particular to moldable polyarylate compositions which have repeating units derived from bis-(3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone (TMBS), optionally a dihydric phenol such as 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane (Bisphenol A) and a mixture of isophthalic acid and terephthalic acid or derivatives thereof. Such polyarylates exhibit improved hydrolytic stability.
