A printing medium comprising a substrate having at least one surface and a coating on the surface wherein the coating comprises: (a) binder comprising: (1) organic polymer which is substantially free of ammonium groups, (2) first cationic addition polymer consisting essentially of quaternary ammonium-containing mer units derived from addition monomer and ammonium-free mer units derived from addition monomer, and (3) second cationic addition polymer consisting essentially of secondary, tertiary, or both secondary and tertiary ammonium-containing mer units derived from addition monomer and ammonium-free mer units derived from addition monomer, wherein the binder constitutes from 20 to 90 percent by weight of the coating; and (b) finely divided substantially water-insoluble filler particles which have a maximum dimension of less than 500 nanometers, are distributed throughout the binder, and constitute from 10 to 80 percent by weight of coating.

A method comprising heating to elevated temperature a ceramic substrate having thereon a sequence of coatings of pigmented coating compositions wherein each of said pigmented coating compositions comprises: (a) reactive organic resin which is polyhydroxy-functional, polyepoxy-functional, or both epoxy-functional and hydroxy-functional; (b) reactive wax; (c) color-imparting pigment; and (d) blocked polyisocyanate; wherein: (e) the pigmented coating composition of at least one coating of the sequence is substantially free of amino-functional curing agent; and (f) the pigmented coating composition of at least one other coating of the sequence further comprises amino-functional curing agent; to crosslink all of the pigmented coating compositions of the coatings of the sequence and to adhere the sequence to the ceramic substrate. The preferred ceramic substrates are glass bottles.The outermost coating of the sequence may optionally be overlain with a coating of substantially clear overcoating composition which comprises reactive organic resin which is polyhydroxy-functional, polyepoxy-functional, or both epoxy-functional and hydroxy-functional. Upon heating to the elevated curing temperature, the substantially clear overcoating composition is crosslinked together with the pigmented coating compositions.

Method for forming a sequence of crosslinked pigmented coatings on ceramic substrates

A printing medium comprising a substrate having at least one surface and a coating on the surface wherein the coating comprises: (a) binder comprising: (1) organic polymer which is substantially free of onium groups, and (2) onium addition polymer consisting essentially of onium-containing mer units derived from addition monomer and onium-free mer units derived from addition monomer of which from 20 to 100 percent by weight is hydrophobic addition monomer, wherein the binder constitutes from 20 to 90 percent by weight of the coating; and (b) finely divided substantially water-insoluble pseudoboehmite particles which have a maximum dimension of less than 500 nanometers, are distributed throughout the binder, and constitute from 10 to 80 percent by weight of the coating.

Printed matter of high optical density may be obtained by ink-jet printing techniques when the coating contains composite particulate amorphous precipitated silica having a calculated multimodal particle size distribution wherein the particle sizes at the modes are less than 10 micrometers.

Coating composition for recording paper

A method is disclosed for preparing ammonium hydroxyalkyl sulfonate by a process of reacting ammonium bisulfite and alkylene oxide wherein the pH is maintained at a relatively low value throughout most of the time of reaction of ammonium bisulfite and alkylene oxide in order to minimize the quantity of impurities, e.g. alkylene glycol and alkanolamine, in the ammonium hydroxyalkyl sulfonate. Ammonium alkanoyl alkyl sulfonates prepared by reacting such ammonium hydroxyalkyl sulfonates with fatty acids form aqueous solutions which are clear at ambient temperatures, and thus are useful as surfactants in clear liquid products.

Method for preparing ammonium hydroxyalkyl sulfonates and ammonium

A polymeric reaction product is disclosed that is a silylated polyamine-containing polymer having moieties from fatty acid moieties and/or chain extenders as difunctional organo moieties and free amine moieties and hydrolyzed and/or hydrolyzable organofunctional silane moieties and that is at least water dispersible. The reactants that produce this product are a polyamine-containing polymer with fatty acid moieties and free amine moieties and at least one amine-reactable organo functional alkoxysilane or its hydrolysis products. The former reactant results from the reaction of a polyamine-containing polymer with free amine moieties with fatty acids alone or in mixtures with other fatty acids and/or dimer acids. The polymeric reaction product is combined with a predominant amount of water to form a fiber treating formulation that can reside on the surface of one or more treated fibers.

Silylated polyamine polymers and a method of treating fibers

Described are detergent compositions that exhibit reduced skin irritation properties while providing excellent cleaning and detergent characteristics. The detergent composition contains anionic and/or nonionic surface active materials that are at least mildly irritating to the skin and an amount of alkyl poly(ethyleneoxy)sulfonate sufficient to reduce the primary skin irritation potential of the detergent composition. The aliphatic poly(ethyleneoxy)sulfonate typically has a hydrophobe containing from 12 to about 22 carbon atoms and an average of from about 10 to about 30 ethyleneoxy groups, and is present in the detergent composition in amounts of from about 5 to about 50 percent of the total amount of surface active material in the detergent composition.

A composition comprises: (A) chlorine-containing organic solvent selected from the group consisting of methylchloroform, trichloroethylene, perchlorethylene, and mixtures thereof, and (B) non-ionic surfactant selected from the group consisting of ##STR1## or mixtures thereof, wherein: (C) each R is independently straight or branched alkyl containing from about 8 to about 24 carbon atoms or ##STR2## (D) each R' is independently straight or branched alkyl containing from about 8 to about 18 carbon atoms, (E) each Z is independently fluoro, chloro, bromo, or alkoxy containing from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, (F) the average value of a is in the range of from 0 to about 100, (G) the average value of b is in the range of from 0 to about 60, (H) the average value of c is in the range of from 0 to about 50, (I) the sum of the average values of a, b, and c is in the range of from 3 to about 150, (J) the sum of the average values of d and f is in the range of from 2 to about 50, (K) the average value of e is in the range of from 2 to about 60, (L) the average value of g is in the range of from 2 to about 50, (M) the average value of n is in the range of from 0 to about 2, and (N) the composition is essentially free of methylene chloride.
