Techniques for reducing or eliminating effects of noise on a wireless communication system are provided. In one aspect of the invention, the technique comprises monitoring noise attributable to an interference source that may affect one or more components of the wireless communication system. The interference source being monitored is distant from the wireless communication system to the degree that noise arrives at the wireless communication system within a substantially point source-like angular range. For example, the noise may be attributable to the sun or tropospheric ducting. The technique then comprises initiating one or more operations, as a function of the monitored noise, to reduce or eliminate the effects of the noise attributable to the distant interference source at one or more of the components of the wireless communication system that are determined to be affected by such noise.

Methods and apparatus for mitigating the effects of solar noise and the like on a wireless communication system

A cellular-type wireless communications system, comprising: an airborne platform that reflects wireless communication signals; and a centralized base station associated with at least one cell, each cell corresponding to a geographic area, the centralized base station configured to send wireless communication signals to the airborne platform and receive wireless subscriber signals which have reflected down off of the airborne platform.

Systems and techniques for location determination. A plurality of tags emitting radio frequency signals are dispersed throughout a region, such as a building, within which a user's location is to be determined. The radio frequency signals emitted by the tags include information that can be used to identify the location in which the tags axe placed, or simply to distinguish the tags from one another. A portable device receives signals from the tags and provides the signal information to a location server that computes the location of the portable device by comparing the signal information received from the portable device to a map of location venus stored signal information, and identifies the location of the portable device as the location for which the stored signal information best matches the signal information received from the portable device.

An improved process for making a structure using three dimensional printing techniques is disclosed. Briefly stated, the method can be summarized by the following steps: A first type of powder material is deposited in a defined area to form a first layer. Next, a binder material is applied to certain regions of the first type of powder to define a portion of the structure to be formed. And finally, a portion of the unbound powder is removed using a technique such as vacuuming. The foregoing steps are repeated a sufficient number of times to create the desired shape of the structure as defined by the regions held by the binder material.

Process for forming integrated structures using three dimensional printing techniques

A wireless telecommunications system with a base station positioned on an airborne platform is provided. The system utilizes a ground-based wireless switching center which communicates via a microwave link with a plurality of airborne base stations positioned above a geographic area being serviced by the telecommunications system. The base stations are supported on an airborne platform having a propulsion system designed to maintain the platform and the base stations in position above the geographic area being serviced. Advantageously, the platform may be positioned in the stratonull which is generally very stable and is located above the troposphere, wherein weather variations occur.

The disclosed method of operating an installation that comprises one or more long electrical conductors (exemplarily an electric utility, telecommunication system or pipeline) involves receiving and/or collecting substantially real time data representative of the time derivative of Earth's magnetic field (dB/dt) at a multiplicity of points within an appropriate geographic region, comparing the data (or data derived therefrom) to pre-determined critical values and, if indicated by the result of the comparison, changing the operating conditions of the installation. Use of the disclosed method can make possible system-protective action in the case of solar magnetic disturbances (SMD). Such disturbances in the past have caused black-outs and other undesirable conditions. In a preferred embodiment the installation operator can have available dB/dt 'maps' of a multiplicity of spatial scales, ranging from an essentially local scale to a substantial continental one. This not only can aid in the discrimination between operating difficulties due to 'normal' causes (e.g., ordinary equipment failure) and difficulties due to SMD, but also can provide warning of impeding operating difficulties, such as possible increased power demand by a remote installation.
