Dual modulator displays are disclosed incorporating a phosphorescent plate interposed in the optical path between a light source modulation layer and a display modulation layer. Spatially modulated light output from the light source modulation layer impinges on the phosphorescent plate and excites corresponding regions of the phosphorescent plate which in turn emit light having different spectral characteristics than the light output from the light source modulation layer. Light emitted from the phosphorescent plate is received and further modulated by the display modulation layer to provide the ultimate display output.

Embodiments of the invention facilitate high-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging by generating portions of spatial and/or temporal luminance patterns with different spectral power distributions substantially concurrent with, for example, the modulation of the light intensity associated with the portions of luminance patterns. The method can include predicting luminance patterns associated with multiple spectral power distributions. The method also can include distributing portions of the luminance patterns in one or more temporal fields. In some embodiments, distributing the portions of the luminance patterns can include interlacing those portions. Further, the method can include modulating light intensities of the luminance patterns to produce an age with other spectral power distributions. In some embodiments, the distribution of the luminance pattern portions can be substantially synchronous with modulating the light intensity of the luminance patterns.

The first device may emit red light, the second device may emit green light, the third device may emit light blue light and the fourth device may emit deep blue light. The device includes a first device plane and a second device plane. The first device plane comprises a plurality of the first organic light emitting device and a plurality of the second organic light emitting device. The second device plane comprises a plurality of at least one of the third organic light emitting device and the fourth organic light emitting device. The planes of the first and second device planes are parallel. The second device plane is transposed from the first device plane in a direction perpendicular to the planes of the first and second device planes. The first and second device planes are superposed.

The present invention relates to the field of color filters, in particular, to a non-absorbing polarization color filters and to high-brightness color liquid crystal display panel with improved image contrast employing non-absorbing polarization color filters and light recycling among neighboring subpixels. The disclosed invention represents a non-absorbing polarization color filter comprising the following elements: a rear broadband multilayer lossless polarizer, a front broadband multilayer lossless polarizer, and a color polarization rotator. The rear broadband multilayer lossless polarizer has a predefined-oriented transmission axis AB. Said front broadband multilayer lossless polarizer is located approximately in parallel with the rear broadband multilayer lossless polarizer, and has a transmission axis approximately parallel or approximately orthogonal with respect to transmission axis AB. The color polarization rotator is located between the front broadband multilayer lossless polarizer and the rear broadband multilayer lossless polarizer. Said color polarization rotator comprises a stack of thin birefringent films with c-axes orientations alternated in sign according to a rocking angle &#x3b1; with respect to orientation of the transmission axis AB. A number, a rocking angle &#x3b1;, thicknesses and optical anisotropies of thin birefringent films are selected so, that the non-absorbing polarization color filter transmits a predetermined color light having the polarization state approximately parallel to transmission axis AB, reflects said predetermined color light having the polarization state orthogonal to the transmission axis AB, and reflects an unpolarized light of other predetermined color.

A color liquid crystal display is provided comprising a front panel including at least one polarizer, a rear panel including at least one polarizer, liquid crystal placed between the front and rear panels, a reflective layer on the rear panel, and a matrix of color filters. The polarizer on the rear panel is an internal polarizer and placed before the matrix of color filters or between said matrix and the reflective layer. The combined thickness of all layers positioned between the matrix of color filters and the rear polarizer does not exceed 10 microns.
