A liquid chromatography system including a liquid pump having a pumping chamber, an inlet port, an outlet port, and a purge port, all communicating with the pumping chamber; a separation column; an outlet valve connected between the outlet port and the separation column and adapted to control liquid flow therebetween; a source of mobile phase; an inlet valve connected between the inlet port and the source and adapted to control liquid flow therebetween; and a purge valve connected to the purge port.

A centrifuge apparatus including a rotor; a drive coupled to the rotor; an inner ring adapted to pivotally support an annular array of inner containers having open upper ends; an inner coupling coupled between the rotor and the inner ring so as to cause rotation thereof and resultant centrifugal force induced inward pivotal movement of the upper ends into the centrifuge positions; an outer ring adapted to pivotally support an annular array of outer containers having open upper ends and displaced outwardly from the inner array in a direction transverse to the rotational axis of the rotor means; an outer coupling coupled between the rotor and the outer ring so as to cause rotation thereof and resultant centrifugal force induced inward pivotal movement of the upper ends of the outer containers into centrifuge positions; and an inner orientation mechanism for preventing movement of the upper ends of the inner containers into their centrifuge positions.

Automated centrifuge

A torque-sensing rotary tool for use in bottle-capping, and other such applications. The tool (10) is characterized by independent motors (30 and 40) means for gripping and rotating bottles or the like and a rotation-counter which forms means, with associated circuitry (FIG. 9), to determine when an object, e.g. a bottle cap, may be safely lifted by automatic machinery, e.g. by robot means.

A pump for precise, smooth delivery of liquid, particularly in liquid chromatography systems, featuring two liquid displacement elements mounted for reciprocating movement in chambers connected in series with two check valves, one displacement element serving to accumulate some of the liquid delivered by the first element and to deliver the accumulated liquid while the first element is refilling. Also disclosed is a fluid storage device for smoothing pulses from the pump comprising a flattened tube wound into a helix and placed within an annulus formed by an inner and an outer cylindrical wall. These cylindrical walls maintain the flattened tubing from expanding beyond its elastic strain limit.

A column for use in liquid chromatographic processes wherein the column is formed with an external reinforcing sleeve that has been found to contribute dimensional stability which results in surprising and important advantages in improving chromatographic performance. Another aspect of the invention comprises the preparation of the internal wall of the column which has an advantageous finish of 32 micro inches or better.

Chromatography tube

A plate-like structure comprising a liquid flow path formed in one face thereof, a thin ductile seal-forming coating on the face of the structure which forms the flow path. The structure finds many utilities, most advantageously in constructing a novel valve wherein the disk is flexible and adapted for flexing a central face portion thereof against a conduit, thereby sealing said conduit.

Novel end fitting assemblies of particular advantage for use on liquid chromatographic columns, and novel chromatographic columns comprising these novel end fittings. The end-fittings are characterized by (a) very low dead space; (b) economical and convenient replacement of wearing parts; with minimal disturbing of the packed column, or other functional end-fitting components such as cones, filters, etc. A particular advantage is the design whereby the connector portions of the fitting assembly are not normally wetted by process fluids during operation of the column. Thus, the connector portions of the assemblies can be selected from a wide variety of mechanically-desirable materials selected for their wearing characteristics. Moreover, the fittings can be tightened for high-pressure operation without damage to the structure of the column of which they are used.
