An optical beam scanning semiconductor device includes 1×N electrically controlled, integrated optical switch matrix and specifically designed integrated optical grating output couplers at each of N output waveguides of 1×N switch. By selecting one of the N outputs of the 1×N switch as the output of the input optical signal, an optical output beam scans in free space. Variation in the grating output coupler design enables a smart scanning device with multiple controllable beam characteristics.

Integrated thin optical beam scanner

An optical signal to be detected enters single photon avalanche diode cells (SPAD) in a SPAD array and triggers photo event currents. Optical waveguides in the sensor carry an internal optical signal and a 1xN splitter divides the optical power into waveguide branchesN-. At the coupling structure, comprisingN-positive-intrinsic-negative diode photodetector/waveguide structures, photo event currents from SPAD cells are converted to a change in the internal optical signal, by modifying internal optical signalsN-. A waveguide combiner further integrates the modified internal optical signals resulting from the photo event currents from all the cells in the sub-array. After all waveguide branches' signals are combined, a photodetector detects the internal optical signal and outputs an electrical signal. The SPAD circuit may include additional capacitive coupling structures positioned between the SPAD cells and the photodetector/waveguide coupling structures.

Semiconductor photodetector array sensor integrated with optical-waveguide-based devices

A two-beam steering device comprising two single-beam steering devices and a motorized, rotating base stage, wherein each single-beam steering device is able to steer an electromagnetic wave beam in a full field of regard, wherein the two single-beam steering devices are fixed on top of the rotating base stage. The two-beam steering device can point the two individual beams into any direction pair in the entire field of regard with full flexibility.

An optical routing system for free space optical communication is disclosed. The system has a transmitter and a receiver that use free space optical communication, and includes an optical path based on waveguide where an optical signal is routed from the proximity of the transmitter to the proximity of the destination. This system has advantages in terms of mitigating line-of-sight issues, as well as potentially reducing the overall coupling loss that would be otherwise incurred due to beam divergence of free space propagation for long distance.

Optical routing system for free space optical communication

A lidar-based apparatus and method are used for the solid state steering of laser beams using Photonic Integrated Circuits. Integrated optic design and fabrication micro- and nanotechnologies are used for the production of chip-scale optical splitters that distribute an optical signal from a laser essentially uniformly to an array of pixels, said pixels comprising tunable optical delay lines and optical antennas. Said antennas achieve out-of-plane coupling of light. As the delay lines of said antenna-containing pixels in said array are tuned, each antenna emits light of a specific phase to form a desired far-field radiation pattern through interference of these emissions. Said array serves the function of solid state optical phased array. By incorporating a large number of antennas, high-resolution far-field patterns can be achieved by an optical phased array, supporting the radiation pattern beam forming and steering needed in solid state lidar, as well as the generation of arbitrary radiation patterns as needed in three-dimensional holography, optical memory, mode matching for optical space-division multiplexing, free space communications, and biomedical sciences. Whereas imaging from an array is conventionally transmitted through the intensity of the pixels, the optical phased array allows imaging through the control of the optical phase of pixels that receive coherent light waves from a single source.

Solid state optical phased array lidar and method of using same

A system and method wherein electromagnetic radiation is used for free-space communication and wireless power transfer. The electromagnetic radiation used is preferably optical radiation. The optical free-space communication and wireless power transfer system includes an optical receiver device comprising an optical filter, a photodetector, and a photovoltaic cell, wherein a band of the incoming optical radiation is extracted by the optical filter and directed to the photodetector for communication data signal detection. The remaining optical radiation is converted by the photovoltaic cell into electrical power so that the harvested energy can be stored, used as the power source of the photodetector, or used as the power source of external devices.

Free-space communication and wireless power transfer system and method of using same

A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) spectrometer for sensing the spectroscopic signature of airborne molecules, comprising a dispersive element to separate the spectral information spatially, and a tuning mechanism for said dispersive element to convert the spectral information to time-dependent information. The approach allows the PIC spectrometer to have a single (or a few) output pin(s), enabling sensing of the environment with a simple packaged chip that is compact, lightweight, energy efficient and low cost, making it suitable for platforms that have a small form factor, a small power budget, and are cost sensitive, such as mobile devices.

Apparatus and method for selective disabling of LiDAR detector array elements

Small form-factor, sensitive and efficient waveguide devices capable of nondispersive infrared gas or liquid sensing and photocatalysis are designed based on photonic integrated circuits. The devices comprise three-dimensional optical waveguiding structures and preferably integrated light sources and photodetectors. Since the length of the waveguide scales with the number of waveguiding layers, a plurality of layers is used to design high-sensitivity sensors and high-efficiency photocatalysis devices. In one embodiment, titanium dioxide absorbs ultraviolet light to generate an electron-hole pair which, in the presence of water and oxygen, generates radicals that react with and mineralize undesirable organic compounds, such as the lipid membranes that envelope and protect viruses such as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), allowing to pry apart the membranes and destroy the cells. Such photocatalysis devices can be used in airflow systems designed to circulate the air of essentially confined spaces through these devices to create air-disinfecting systems.

Optical sensing and photocatalysis devices based on three-dimensional waveguiding structures and method of using same

An apparatus has N optical structures positioned on a two-dimensional lattice defining a plane. The N optical structures are configured to redirect light out of the plane. The N optical structures are collectively arranged in a configuration that includes select elements on the two-dimensional lattice. N optical waveguides are integrated in the plane to individually supply optical power to each of the N optical structures.

An apparatus and method are used for three-dimensional sensing with a time-of-flight lidar sensor having a single emitter sensing in one dimension, at least one photodetector, and a mechanical means of scanning in two dimensions said emitter and at least one photodetector. The external case of the lidar is preferably static, and only internal components involve mechanical motion. In a preferred embodiment of said lidar when operated in the infrared, said external static case has a window that is visually opaque and essentially transparent to infrared radiation.

Three-dimensional-mapping two-dimensional-scanning LIDAR based on one-dimensional-steering optical phased arrays and method of using same

A lidar-based system and method are used for the solid state beamforming and steering of laser beams using optical phased array (OPA) photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and the detection of laser beams using photodetectors. Transmitter and receiver electronics, power management electronics, control electronics, data conversion electronics and processing electronics are also included in the system and used in the method. Laser pulses beamformed by the OPA PIC reflect from objects in the field of view (FOV) of said OPA, and are detected by a detector or a set of detectors. A lidar system includes at least one lidar, and any subset and any number of complementary sensors, data processing/communication/storage modules, and a balance of system for supplying power, protecting, connecting, and mounting the components of said system. Direct correlation between the 3D point cloud generated by the lidar and the color images captured by an RGB (Red, Green, Blue) video camera can be achieved by using an optical beam splitter that sends optical signals simultaneously to both sensors. A lidar system may contain a plurality of lidar sensors, a lidar sensor may contain a plurality of optical transmitters, and an optical transmitter may contain a plurality of OPA PICs.
