A roll for smoothing a web, a process for making the roll and a process of repairing the roll. The roll includes a roll core having an outer surface. A covering layer is disposed on the outer surface of the roll core. The covering layer has an inner surface and an outer surface. The covering layer includes an elastic matrix material. The elastic matrix material includes a mixture of at least one thermosetting plastic and at least one thermoplastic. The process of making includes providing a roll core having an outer surface, forming an elastic covering layer including at least one thermosetting plastic and at least one thermoplastic, and applying the covering layer to the outer surface of the roll core. The process of repairing includes heating an elastic covering layer made from an elastic matrix material which comprises at least one thermosetting plastic and at least one thermoplastic, and allowing any markings in a surface of the covering layer to be filled.

Elastic roll, process for producing such a roll, and process of repairing the roll

Roll for smoothing a web and method of making the roll, wherein the roll includes a hard roll core. An elastic covering layer is arranged on an outside surface of the hard roll core. The elastic covering layer includes an elastic matrix material and fibers embedded in the elastic matrix material. At least some of the fibers have a diameter which is less than 800 nm. A surface of the elastic covering layer has an extremely high smoothness. The method includes introducing the fibers into the elastic matrix material to form the elastic covering layer and coupling the elastic covering layer with the hard roll core.

The double-soft nip(s) are formed by two rolls, each with an elastic surface layer. At least one of the rolls forming the double-soft nip is heated. In a process using the calendar to treat a material web, the web is introduced into a roll stack having at least two rolls formed with an elastic surface layer over a rigid core, agglomerated in an elastic double-soft nip between the two rolls, heated to introduce energy into the material web and promote agglomerating, and smoothed in the elastic double-soft nip.

The method includes slitting a web sheet into a plurality of partial webs, reeling the partial webs, in the reeling section, into a plurality of partial rolls, attaching a packaging web to a peripheral portion of at least one of the plurality of partial rolls in the reeling section, and rotating the at least one of the plurality of partial rolls to wind the packaging web around a radial surface of the at least one of the plurality of partial rolls.
