A fiber-optic light guide is provided. The light guide includes plurality of optical fibers and an enveloping material. The plurality of optical fibers define a flexible fiber bundle. The flexible fiber bundle has a first diameter and a length along a longitudinal axis. The enveloping material encloses the plurality of optical fibers at one end of the flexible fiber bundle and over at least a part of the length to define a rigid portion. The plurality of optical fibers in the rigid portion are fused with one another. The flexible fiber bundle has a modified or formed cross-sectional geometry in a region of the enveloping material.

An illumination system for medical therapeutic and/or diagnostic system is provided. The illumination system includes a laser light source and a light guide. The light guide has a proximal end that is connectable and/or assignable to the one laser light source. The light guide has a distal end with a diffuser element having a radial, spherical emission characteristic. The diffuser element includes a diffuser main body made of an inorganic material, in particular a glass, a glass ceramic, a glass-like substance or a composite substance of the aforementioned substances. The present disclosure provides a device and a method with which flat glasses with particularly uniform thickness can be obtained. The methods are drawing methods in which a glass ribbon is drawn. In the method an aperture is used which allows a defined very small slit between the glass ribbon and the aperture also in the case of a change of the position of the glass ribbon.

The present disclosure relates to compositions that can be used for optical fibers and other systems that transmit light in the near-, mid- and/or far-ranges of the infrared spectrum, such as for example in the wavelength range of 1.5 &#x3bc;m to 14 &#x3bc;m. The optical fibers may comprise a light-transmitting chalcogenide core composition and a cladding composition. In some embodiments, the light-transmitting chalcogenide core composition has a refractive index n(core) and a coefficient of thermal expansion CTE(core), and the cladding composition has a refractive index n(cladding) and a coefficient of thermal expansion CTE(cladding), wherein n(cladding) is less than n(core) and in some embodiments wherein CTE(cladding) is less than CTE(core). In some embodiments, the chalcogenide glass core composition comprises a) sulfur and/or selenium, b) germanium, and c) gallium, indium, tin and/or one or more metal halides.

Chalcogenide compositions for optical fibers and other systems

A flexible light guide that has a homogeneous light emission with high luminance is provided. The flexible light guide is provided by a side-emitting light guide. The side-emitting light guide includes a light-guiding fiber designed as a side-emitting fiber so that light guided in the fiber is scattered out along a longitudinal direction in a distributed manner. The guide also includes a tube that surrounds the fiber. The tube is designed to be light-scattering and translucent so that light emitted from the fiber can traverse the tube with scattering. The tube is surrounded by a cladding. The tube and cladding are made of plastic.

Side-emitting light guide and method for the production thereof

A light source with a linear appearance is provided. The light source has a flexible light guide that has a homogeneous light emission with high luminance and a emitting light guide. The light emitting guide has a core, in which at least one soul extends, and a transparent cladding that surrounds the core. The core and the cladding are formed from transparent plastic. The core has a higher index of refraction than the cladding. The soul is light-deflecting, light-reflecting, or light-scattering so as to scatter light guided in the light guide and to emit the light through the cladding toward the outside. The soul has a scattering length that is at most twice as large as a maximum cross-sectional dimension of the soul.

An illumination device for irradiating objects with electromagnetic radiation is provided. The illumination device includes at least one light guide and a radiation source that emits electromagnetic radiation in the spectral region from 320 nm to 420 nm into the light guide. The light guide is formed of a glass that has a spectral transmittance of at least 70% at 350 nm and is selected from the system of lead-free silicate-tin glasses.

A device for making up a plurality of synchronously produced individual optical fibers includes a drawing installation for drawing the fibers and a take-up winder for winding up the fibers on a take-up spool. The drawing installation provides an identical and constant drawing rate for each of the fibers. The take-up winder has a compensating device to compensate for differences in speed of the fibers between the drawing installation and the take-up spool. Fluctuations of the fiber diameter during production of the fibers are avoided and the fibers are passed at a substantially constant rate to the take-up winder. A fiber bundle can be made up without influencing the drawing rate, thereby also avoiding reactions on the melting process when drawing the fibers from a heated preform. A method for making up a plurality of synchronously produced individual optical fibers is also provided.

Device and method for drawing optical fibers

Step-index optical waveguides are made of multicomponent glass containing a core glass and an outer glass which entirely surrounds the core class. A fiber-optic cable for conducting electromagnetic radiation, contains at least one bundle of individual fibers which encompass the step-index optical waveguides that are made of multicomponent glass containing a core glass and an outer glass that entirely surrounds the core glass on the circumferential wall thereof. These step-index optical waveguides provide great transmission capacity for transmitting data while keeping the transfer characteristics sufficiently durable. Furthermore, the fiber-optic cable is resistant against physical and chemical environmental influences and be protected against radical ambient chemicals. These aims are achieved by the fact that the outer glass of the step-index optical waveguides is provided with a material composition which is largely free from chemical interactions with the core glass when the fibers are drawn and is chemically inactive towards the plastic jacket.
