An example system and method for providing audio feedback to a software user when scrolling, panning, or zooming a content area. An example method includes determining one or more dimensions of the content area, which includes one or more sections; detecting a scroll command; scrolling the content such that a user interface viewport moves across the content area in accordance with the scroll command; and playing plural sounds during the scrolling to indicate a scroll direction, a scroll velocity, and to indicate a start position and an end position of the viewport relative to the content area.

Audio feedback for continuous scrolled content

A system and method for facilitating adjusting a displayed representation of a visualization. An example method includes displaying a first visualization that includes plural nodes; providing a first user option to specify a first node attribute; and stacking nodes of the first visualization based on the first node attribute, resulting in display of one or more stacks of nodes. In a more specific embodiment, one or more links connect one or more of the plural nodes to one or more other nodes of the plural nodes. The method further includes adjusting the first visualization to illustrate the one or more stacks of nodes, while preserving any links, resulting in display of a second visualization in response thereto. The step of adjusting further includes animating a transition between display of the first visualization and display of the second visualization.

Attribute-based stacking for diagrams

A method and system for visualizing a system. The method includes obtaining a context managed entity from a client system, wherein the context managed entity corresponds to software executing on a computer system, querying a managed entity repository to obtain a plurality of managed entities linked to the context managed entity, wherein the plurality of managed entities comprises a software managed entity and a hardware managed entity, and generating a node in a topology model object for each of the plurality of managed entities. The method further includes generating a link object in the topology model object for each link between managed entities in the plurality of managed entities and rendering a topology graph comprising each node and each link object in the topology model object.

Interactive topological views of combined hardware and software systems

A system and method for illustrating data. An example method includes organizing the data into objects; assigning a transparency value to each object; and graphically depicting the data by distributing nodes representing the objects in a region of a visualization in accordance with a distribution method or function. Each node is displayed as partially transparent in accordance with the transparency value. In a more specific embodiment, the visualization includes a galaxy visualization with nodes that are randomly or pseudo randomly distributed about a center point or region of the visualization.

Galaxy views for visualizing large numbers of nodes

A system for generating audio impressions of data for a visually-impaired user. The system receives data that is displayable by a chart. The data comprises a plurality of values. The system generates an audio impression of the received data. The audio impression includes a first portion and a second portion. The first portion is based upon at least a first value of the received data. The second portion is based upon at least a second value of the received data. An audible difference between the first portion and the second portion reflects the magnitude of a difference between the first value and the second value.

Generating audio impressions of data

A system and method for adjusting a displayed visualization, such as a tree diagram. An example method includes providing a first mechanism for facilitating adjusting spacing between plural leaf nodes of a visualization by a first factor and providing a signal indicative of the first factor in response thereto; and employing a second mechanism to display an updated visualization in response to the signal, wherein spacing between leaf nodes of the updated visualization is adjusted relative to the initial visualization based on the signal, such that a region defined by a group of leaf nodes, whose spacing therebetween has been adjusted, is shrunk or enlarged based on the first factor. In an illustrative embodiment, the example method further includes adjusting the spacing between leaf nodes so that leaf nodes overlap each other.

Compressing tree diagrams

A charting application generates a so-called timelink chart. To generate the timelink chart, the charting application renders a timeline axis representing a segment of time. The charting application further renders a business event axis in (orthogonal) relation to the timeline axis. Positions on the business event axis indicate respective types of business events that can occur. For each of multiple business events associated with a respective business activity, the charting application generates a corresponding event instance with respect to the business event axis and the timeline axis to indicate a type associated with a respective business event of the multiple business events and when the respective business event occurs in time. In a final step, the charting application generates a graphical link connecting multiple event instances (associated with the respective business activity) in the timelink chart to display a progression of the respective business activity over time.

Methods and apparatus to present event information with respect to a timeline

Techniques for increasing the amount of information that may be displayed in a graph produced by a visualization system and simplifying the specification of the information. With regard to nodes of the graph, locations relative to the displayed node at which values of attributes of the displayed node are effective may be specified. 17 locations may be specified using values that indicate compass directions and whether the location is inside or outside the boundaries of the node. Among the attributes whose locations may be specified are content attributes whose values are strings or images and action attributes which specify actions that occur in response to mousing actions at the specified locations. Specification of attributes of nodes and also of links is simplified by the use of inheritance. Also disclosed are an API for setting and reading attributes and a technique for producing compressed representations of nodes at rendering time.

Displaying information using nodes in a graph

Techniques employed in displays of graphs with large numbers of nodes for viewing details of an area of interest while preserving context. The techniques take advantage of parent-child and sibling relationships. Sibling nodes and children of sibling nodes are displayed in rows. The center of interest is at the center of a row and nodes at the ends of the rows overlap. A parent node may have a node scroller associated with it for viewing the parent's child nodes one page of nodes at a time. The node scroller includes paging buttons and may also include a scroll bar with a slider. The node scroller may be displayed on the parent node itself or on the links connecting the parent node to the page of children currently being displayed. Also disclosed are details of the implementation of a preferred embodiment of the node scroller and details of an application programmer's interface (API) for creating and manipulating node scrollers.

Node scrollers

A markup programming technique is described which directs a rendering agent to display at least two charts at the same time and, in response to a cursor operation over one of the charts, to replace the other chart. The cursor operation need not be a mouse click and can simply be the event of moving the cursor into a specified area of the first chart.

Method and article for interactive data exploration

Interval-based adjustments to data are applied by a relational database engine. The engine stores raw, unadjusted data values in a separate table from adjustment values. The adjustment values are dynamically updated in response to a new adjustment interval. The adjustments are applied to the raw data during retrieval from the database. This results in an efficient and transparent adjustment to data.

The present invention is an automated method and system of labeling of the axes of a graph with time based data. The present invention uses multi-level time labels to label the time axis of a graph. The invention generates a set of time labels by processing the input data; the time axis labels stores the set of data in a multi-level data structure. The multi-level data structure is processed to refine the time labels. The refining step includes adjusting the time labels so that they fit in the space provided along the axis and refining the multi-level time labels to make the labeled axis more readable. The time labels are then used to generate multi-level time labels. These multi-level time labels are used to label the axis of the graph. The invention automatically provides an effective, elegant, labeled time based graph.
