Devices and methods for ablating tissue are disclosed. A method for ablating tissue includes applying a first radio frequency ablation current to a target tissue and applying a second radio frequency ablation current to the target tissue. Additionally, the ratio of the frequency of the first radio frequency ablation current to the second radio frequency ablation current is in the range of 1:2 to 1:400.

Medical devices for ablating tissue

A repeater for a wireless power transfer system is disclosed. The repeaters includes an elongated strip of material arranged in a substantially circular configuration with opposing ends of the elongated strip disposed in close proximity to each other, an inductive element associated with the elongated strip and arranged to provide a coupling with an adjacent resonator through flux directed outward from a first surface of the elongated strip, and a capacitive element associated with the elongated strip and arranged to resonate electromagnetic energy with the inductive element when the electromagnetic energy is transferred from the adjacent resonator through the coupling provided by the inductive element.

Examples described herein may include medical devices and electrosurgical generators with resonant isolated transformers to perform filtering and gain functions. An example electrosurgical generator includes a radio frequency (RF) inverter stage configured to receive an input signal and, in response to control feedback signals, to provide an output signal that provides power to a load. The RF inverter stage includes a resonant isolated transformer configured to receive the input signal and to provide gain and filtering adjustments to the input signal to provide the output signal.

Control and inverter design topologies for electronic medical devices

Disclosed are systems and methods for use of an inductive link for a communication channel in a transcutaneous energy transfer system. An example system may include a resonant circuit associated with an external primary, a power transistor connected to the resonant circuit and configured to drive the resonant circuit with a first time-varying electrical signal having a frequency, and a power driver connected to the power transistor that is configured to set the frequency of the first time-varying electrical signal to a resonant frequency to enable power transfer from the external primary to an implanted secondary. The example system may further include a communication driver operatively connected to the power transistor and configured to encode the first time-varying electrical signal with a data signal by modulating an attribute of the time-varying electrical signal as electrical power is transferred from the external primary to the implanted secondary.

Data communication in a transcutaneous energy transfer system

Disclosed is a distributed transformer or extension cord component for a transcutaneous energy transfer system used to transfer electric power to an implanted medical device. The extension cord component may enable power transfer to occur at various points on or near the body of the subject within whom the medical device is implanted. In this way, the subject may gain greater flexibility and high levels of convenience in connection with use of the transcutaneous energy transfer system.

Distributed transformer

Present embodiments are directed to measuring and calculating parameters to control and monitor a power transfer in an implanted medical device. The medical device may be implanted in a subject and typically includes an artificial heart or ventricle assist device. The system measures parameters and uses the parameters to calculate a coupling coefficient for coils that transfer power between an external primary and an implanted secondary. The system uses the calculated coupling coefficient to estimate heat flux being generated in the system. Based on the level heat flux detected, the system may issue alerts to warn the subject or control actions to mitigate the effects of the heat flux.
