Physiologically acceptable films, including edible films, are disclosed. The films include a water soluble film-forming polymer such as pullulan. Edible films are disclosed that include pullulan and antimicrobially effective amounts of the essential oils thymol, methyl salicylate, eucalyptol and menthol. The edible films are effective at killing the plaque-producing germs that cause dental plaque, gingivitis and bad breath. The film can also contain pharmaceutically active agents. Methods for producing the films are also disclosed.

A denture adhesive base composition comprises a substantially anhydrous mixture of a cationic derivatives of guar gum, a mixed Na/Ca salt of methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride and sodium carboxymethylcellulose. A denture adhesive composition including this base composition is provided, as well as a method for formulating the novel adhesives of the invention. Upon hydration, the denture adhesives of the invention form denture adhesive compositions exhibiting improved denture holding and adhesive duration properties.

Compositions having improved anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis activity comprise a synergistic combination of a) a morpholinoamino alcohol or salt thereof, such as 3-(4- propylheptyl)-4-(2-hydroxyethyl) morpholine, and b) a metal salt, such as the salts of divalent zinc, copper and magnesium.

The present invention pertains to denture adhesive compositions comprising a substantially anhydrous mixture, in percentages by weight, of an adhesive component comprised of a mixture of (a) from about 29 to about 34% of a mixed, partial calcium/sodium salt of a methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride-type copolymer, and (b) from about 22 to about 26% sodium carboxymethylcellulose; a vehicle component comprises of a mixture of (c) from about 20 to about 26% petrolatum and from about 15 to about 24% mineral oil; and a hydration and tackifier component comprised of (d) from about 0.5 to about 2% silicon dioxide and (e) from about 1 to about 3% poly(ethylene oxide) homopolymer. The present invention also pertains to methods by which these denture adhesive compositions may be prepared.
