The indicator tool includes an electronic compass module configured to detect and generate a first set of data based on an orientation of magnetic fields associated with the magnetic device as an indication of the setting of the valve and measure and generate a second set of data based on ambient background magnetic fields. The indicator tool electrically communicates the data to the locator tool. The processing system receives and uses the first and second sets of data generated from the electronic compass module to determine orientation of the magnetic device.

An implantable shunt that includes one or more catheters configured so that the implantable shunt has a resistance to flow greater than about 3 mm Hg/mL/minute. An implantable shunt system that includes one or more catheters and a fluid control device that utilizes the properties of the catheters to improve the expected function of the shunt by providing a higher or lower resistance to the flow through the shunt and reduces the effect of pulsations of cerebrospinal fluid on the shunt system.

A system including an implantable flow control device and an electronic valve indicator and locator device. The implantable device includes a valve and a magnetic device. The electronic device includes a locator tool, an indicator tool, and an adjustment tool. The indicator tool includes an electronic compass module for measuring an orientation of sensed magnetic fields and a locator tool interface module for electronically communicating sensed magnetic fields to the processing module. The locator tool has a processing module which receives and stores background magnetic field data, receives target magnetic field data when the indicator tool is coupled to the locator tool and positioned above the implanted device, and electronically determines the setting of the valve based on the background magnetic field data and the target magnetic field data. The adjustment tool aligns with the locator tool for modifying the valve setting when magnetically coupled to the implantable device.

The invention is directed toward a magnetic indicator tool used to determine the setting of an implantable medical device. The implantable medical device includes a magnetic indicator device coupled to a valve on the implantable medical device. External magnetic fields, specifically earth's magnetic field, may interfere with a conventional compass and create an incorrect device setting indication. The magnetic indicator tool estimates the external magnetic fields to subtract the estimate from received data to minimize any influence that external magnetic field has on the accuracy of the device setting measurement.

The invention is directed toward a magnetic valve reader used as an indicator tool. The magnetic valve reader determines a location and an orientation for a magnetic indicator device to indicate a device setting of an implantable medical device. The implantable medical device includes the magnetic indicator device coupled to a valve on the implantable medical device. External magnetic fields, specifically the Earth's magnetic field, may interfere with the compass and create an incorrect device setting indication. The electronic reader estimates the external magnetic fields to subtract the estimate from received data to minimize any influence that external magnetic field has on the accuracy of the device setting measurement.
