An electrical contact assembly is provided that includes insolated blade and receptacle connector housings mateable with one another while moved from initial to final mating positions. A blade contact is provided with a support section that is securely mounted within the insulated connector housing. The blade contact further includes a contact knife projecting from the support section. A receptacle contact is provided having a base section that is securely mounted in the insulated receptacle housing. Arcing zones are defined on the blade and receptacle contacts that are located separate and apart from mating zones. The arcing zones electrically engage one another only when the blade and receptacle contacts are located in the initial mating position to provide a temporary electrical interface for discharging arcs between the blade and receptacle contacts. After which, the arcing zones disengage one another.

An electrical connector which comprises a circular shell (20) in which a dielectric housing (44) having rows of electrical contacts (50) mounted therein is to be positioned, the electrical contacts including receptacle sections (52), matable electrical contacts (63, 81) having contact sections for matable engagement with the receptacle sections (52) and terminating sections for electrical connection to electrical conductors (54) of a cable (12), and dielectric contact-mounting members (67, 85, 87, 89) on which the matable electrical contacts (63, 81) are mounted whereby the matable electrical contacts are arranged in rows so that the contact sections of the matable electrical contacts (63, 81) of each row are electrically connected with the respective receptacle sections (52) of the electrical contacts (50) in the corresponding row of electrical contacts in the dielectric housing (44).

A keying system for an electrical connector (10, 16) is disclosed. Keying members (160, 234) are provided in mating pairs so that one is assembled to the cable connector (10) and the other is assembled to the mating panel connector (16). Each of the keying members (160,234) is assembled by inserting it into the open end of the connector so that lugs (186,236) on the dielectric insert (44,218) within the connector enter camming slots (178) in the keying member (160,234) which is then twisted to lock it in place. The keying members can be easily and conveniently assembled and disassembled in the field by the end user.
