A method and an apparatus () for realising a box () starting from a cardboard band () for packing a plurality of articles () with the box (), wherein the plurality of articles () is contained in a reusable crate (), the first internal wall () of which is positioned such as to minimise the volume of the chamber () containing the plurality of articles (). The apparatus comprises: detecting means () arranged so as to detect data on the volume occupied by the plurality of articles (); cutting means () for cutting a cardboard band () and obtaining a portion of cardboard band () in a flat configuration; a control unit which receives the data from the detecting means () and which commands the cutting means (); movement means () for moving the bottom wall () of the crate (); positioning means () for reciprocally positioning the portion of cardboard band () and the crate () such that the portion of cardboard band () can receive the plurality of articles (); folding means () for folding the portion of cardboard band () in a flat configuration so as to form a box ().
