An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block made of a first material having a plurality of cylinders and an insert made of a second material having a greater stiffness and a lower thermal coefficient of expansion than the first material and casted-in-place into the cylinder block. For each cylinder of the cylinder block, the insert includes a bolted anchor having a first threaded bore suitable to be engaged by an head bolt for fixing a cylinder head to the cylinder block, and a second threaded bore suitable to be engaged by a cap bolt for fixing a main bearing cap to the cylinder block, and a lubrication gallery connected to a plurality of the anchors.

A method is provided for operating an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle. The method includes, but is not limited to storing exhaust gas while the engine is working, and supplying the stored exhaust gas into at least an engine cylinder during a subsequent start phase of the engine.

A turbocharger for an internal combustion engine, comprising a bearing housing, a rotating shaft coupled to the bearing housing, a compressor wheel mounted at one end of the rotating shaft, a compressor housing accommodating the compressor wheel and provided with an inlet and an outlet for an air stream, a turbine wheel mounted at the opposite end of the rotating shaft, and a turbine housing accommodating the turbine wheel and provided with an inlet and an outlet for an exhaust gas stream, wherein the bearing housing comprises a fastening flange suitable to be fixed to a component of the internal combustion engine, wherein the turbine housing is provided with a connecting pipe for fluidly connecting the turbine housing inlet with an exhaust manifold of the internal combustion engine, and wherein the connecting pipe includes means, for compensating axial thermal deformations thereof.

Turbocharger

In an intake arrangement for a combustion chamber in which a first intake duct produces a substantially rotational flow in the chamber, the flow from a second intake duct is divided into two components. The first component is an axial flow into the chamber and the second component is a rotational flow having the same sense of rotation as the first duct. The first and second components arise from the shaping of a junction region between branches of the second intake duct adjacent the chamber.

A cooling system is provided for an internal combustion engine that includes, but is not limited to an engine coolant circuit having a coolant inlet and a coolant outlet, a radiator having an inlet and an outlet, a first pipeline for hydraulically connecting the radiator outlet and the engine coolant inlet, a second pipeline for hydraulically connecting the engine coolant outlet to the radiator inlet, a coolant pump located in the first pipeline for moving a coolant towards the engine coolant inlet, a thermostatic valve located in the first pipeline between the primary pump and the radiator outlet, for closing or at least partially opening the passageway, a bypass pipeline for hydraulically connecting an intermediate point of the second pipeline to an intermediate point of the first pipeline, the latter being located between the thermostatic valve and the radiator outlet, an exhaust gas recirculation cooler located in the bypass pipeline, an auxiliary coolant pump located in the bypass pipeline, and a controlling for controlling the auxiliary coolant pump.
