A very selective process for the catalytic air oxidation of pseudocumene to trimellitic acid. Manganese, cobalt, cerium and titanium in the presence of bromine are used as the catalyst.

Process for the preparation of trimellitic acid

A catalyst for the preparation of phthalic anhydride is disclosed which comprises a carrier having an open arcuate configuration, e.g. in the form of half rings, and an active portion including V.sub.2 O.sub.5 and porous TiO.sub.2 with the pores having mostly a radius in the 500 to 1,500 .ANG. range. Also described is a method of preparing phthalic anhydride which utilizes this catalyst.
