Systems and methods for displaying a cursor and a focus indicator associated with real or virtual objects in a virtual, augmented, or mixed reality environment by a wearable display device are disclosed. The system can determine a spatial relationship between a user-movable cursor and a target object within the environment. The system may render a focus indicator (e.g., a halo, shading, or highlighting) around or adjacent objects that are near the cursor. When the cursor overlaps with a target object, the system can render the object in front of the cursor (or not render the cursor at all), so the object is not occluded by the cursor. The object can be rendered closer to the user than the cursor. A group of virtual objects can be scrolled, and a virtual control panel can be displayed indicating objects that are upcoming in the scroll.

Methods and apparatuses for providing input for head-worn image display devices

Examples of systems and methods for rendering an avatar in a mixed reality environment are disclosed. The systems and methods may be configured to automatically scale an avatar or to render an avatar based on a determined intention of a user, an interesting impulse, environmental stimuli, or user saccade points. The disclosed systems and methods may apply discomfort curves when rendering an avatar. The disclosed systems and methods may provide a more realistic interaction between a human user and an avatar.

Contextual-based rendering of virtual avatars

A mixed reality (MR) device can allow a user to switch between input modes to allow interactions with a virtual environment via devices such as a six degrees of freedom (6DoF) handheld controller and a touchpad input device. A default input mode for interacting with virtual content may rely on the user's head pose, which may be difficult to use in selecting virtual objects that are far away in the virtual environment. Thus, the system may be configured to allow the user to use a 6DoF cursor, and a visual ray that extends from the handheld controller to the cursor, to enable precise targeting. Input via a touchpad input device (e.g., that allows three degrees of freedom movements) may also be used in conjunction with the 6DoF cursor.

Modes of user interaction

Neutral avatars are neutral with reference physical characteristics of the corresponding user, such as weight, ethnicity, gender, or even identity. Thus, neutral avatars may be desirable to use in various copresence environments where the user desires to maintain privacy with reference to the above-noted characteristics. Neutral avatars may be configured to convey, in real-time, actions and behaviors of the corresponding user without using literal forms of the user's actions and behaviors.

The cursor and focus indicator can provide the user with positional feedback and help the user navigate among objects in the environment.

Systems and methods for displaying a group of virtual objects and a scrollbar in a virtual, augmented, or mixed reality environment are disclosed. The group of virtual objects can be scrolled, and a virtual control panel can be displayed indicating objects that are upcoming in the scroll. The scrollbar can provide real-time feedback that can give the user an indication of the point from which the scrolling started, the point at which the scrolling currently has reached, an amount of the group of virtual objects that are displayed to the user relative to the total amount of the group of virtual objects, or a relative position of the currently-viewable virtual objects relative to the entire group of virtual objects.
