A sensor assembly with a sensing element sends a sensor signal from the sensing element to attached process transmitter over sensor connection wires. The sensor assembly has memory circuitry for storing information related to the sensor assembly and interface circuitry that provides for digital communication of the stored information with the attached process transmitter. This digital communication is sent over the sensor connection wires.

Sensor/transmitter plug-and-play for process instrumentation

A process variable transmitter for use in an industrial control or monitoring process is provided and includes a housing with a cavity formed therein. The housing includes an integrated terminal block which defines first and second compartments in the cavity. The transmitter further includes a process variable sensor configured to sense a process variable of the industrial process. Measurement circuitry is carried in the first compartment and configured to receive a process variable signal from the process variable sensor and provide an output. An electrical connection is carried on the integrated terminal block in the second compartment and is electrically coupled to the output of the measurement circuitry.

Process variable transmitter with dual compartment housing

A process variable transmitter, includes an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter that receives a sensor signal provided by a sensor that senses a process variable and converts the sensor signal to a digital signal. A processor receives the digital signal and provides a measurement output indicative of the digital signal. A noise detector receives the sensor signal and generates a first value indicative of a number of positive noise events relative to a positive threshold value and a second value indicative of a number of negative noise events relative to a negative threshold value. The processor evaluates the noise count and generates a noise output, indicative of detected noise, based on the first and second values.

A method for calibrating a transmitter with measurement circuitry electrically connected to first and second input terminals includes connecting a primary temperature sensor to the first input terminal and connecting a calibrated reference device to the second input terminal. The measurement circuitry is calibrated with respect to the first input terminal according to signals received from the second input terminal while measuring temperature according to signals received from the first input terminal.

A sensor system comprises a process transducer, a unpowered vibration sensor, and a process transmitter. The process transducer is disposed within a thermowell and configured to produce a first sensor signal. The unpowered vibration sensor is configured to produce a second sensor signal reflecting vibration of the thermowell. The process transmitter is configured to receive, process, and transmit the first and second sensor signals.

Vibration detection in thermowells

A system for measuring temperature includes a thermowell, a primary temperature sensor, a reference sensor, and a transmitter. The thermowell has a measurement instrument connection and a side port. The primary temperature sensor extends into the thermowell through the measurement instrument connection, and the reference sensor extends into the thermowell through the side port. The transmitter is connected to each of the primary temperature sensor and the reference sensor. The transmitter has circuitry for measuring temperature based upon signals received from the primary temperature sensor and for concurrently calibrating based upon signals received from the reference sensor.

An apparatus for measuring a temperature of a process fluid includes a resistance based temperature sensor (RTD) sensor configured to thermally couple to the process fluid. First and second electrical connections are configured to apply a current through the RTD. Measurement circuitry is configured to measure a voltage across the RTD and identify a degraded connection to the RTD and responsively measure a temperature of the process fluid using the electrical connections.

Process fluid temperature measurement

In a process temperature transmitter, a method for providing a process temperature output is described. The method includes providing a measurement current through a circuit including a reference resistor and a resistance temperature device (RTD). A first voltage across the reference resistor is measured while the measurement current flows through it. A first voltage across the RTD is also measured while the measurement current flows through it. A first resistance of the RTD is calculated based on the measured voltage across the reference resistor and the measured first voltage. A first process temperature output is provided based on the first resistance of the RTD. A second voltage is subsequently measured across the RTD while a measurement current flows through it. A second voltage across the reference resistor is then estimated based on the measured second voltage across the RTD and the measured first voltage across the reference resistor. A second resistance across the RTD is calculated based on the measured second voltage and the estimated second voltage. A second process temperature output is provided based on the second resistance.

Process temperature transmitter with improved temperature calculation

A process variable transmitter for measuring a temperature of a process includes a first, a second, third, and fourth terminal configured to couple to the temperature sensitive element. Measurement circuitry measures an electrical parameter between a pair of the terminals. A microprocess identifies a location of the temperature sensitive element coupled to at least two of the terminals based upon an electrical parameter measured by the measured circuitry between two terminals. In another configuration, the process variable transmitter measures temperature of a process using a thermocouple. A heating element is configured to heat terminals coupled to the thermocouple. A microprocessor determines polarity of the thermocoupled based upon a measured electrical parameter between the terminals in response to applied heat.

Temperature sensor configuration detection in process variable transmitter

Infrared radiation from a plurality of locations associated with a process is measured by a field device, which includes a plurality of input channels, a plurality of IR sensors, and a data processor. The infrared radiation from the locations associated with the process is received by the input channels and the intensity of the infrared radiation is measured by the IR sensors to produce representative sensor signals. The data processor produces an output as a function of selected sensor signals.
