Methods and apparatus for sonically attracting bass fish to a desired location which entails propagating a sound into water constituting a habitat for fish, the propagated sound being an emulation of the sound made by a bass fish striking and eating a live bait species. In one embodiment of the invention, the propagated sound is originated at the location to which the fish are to be attracted by first recording the sound of bass fish striking and then consuming a live bait species at an underwater situs, and then propagating the recorded sound from a selected location.

A method for locating and catching fish in which a pH measuring device is lowered from the surface of a body of water constituting a fish habitat. During the lowering of the device, the depth at which the device is located is measured periodically, and the pH of the water at the several measured depths is determined. The several measured depths and the corresponding pH values are compared to determine the rate of change of pH per unit of depth. One or more discrete intervals of depth of the water over which the greatest rates of change of pH occur are identified. Upon completion of the lowering, the pH measuring device is removed from the water. A fish catching device is lowered in the water to a point located from about one to eight feet above a depth interval at which a marked increase in the rate of change of pH in the water has been identified as occurring.

A method for selecting a fishing lure of a color or colors most visible and attractive to fish which includes the steps of observing the condition of the water to be fished to determine the relative clarity of the water, then measuring the light transmittance at the depth in the water to be fished. The water condition observed and the light transmittance value measured are then compared with a color chart upon which colors have been precorrelated to light transmittance values and water clarity conditions according to which color is most attractive to fish at a specific transmittance value and water condition. A lure color is selected on the basis of such comparison, and used to fish at the depth at which the water transmittance value has been measured. The method is carried out by using an apparatus which includes a device for lowering a light sensing probe into the water, and further including a color chart and associated light meter which shows which color is preferred by (most attractive to) fish under the most frequently encountered water conditions, and when the light transmittance at selected fishing depths in that type of water is at any specific one of a number of light transmittance values.

Apparatus and methods for locating and catching certain fish species known as Largemouth Bass and Striped Bass, by locating those zones within a body of fresh water having a pH within the range of from about pH 7.5 to about pH 8.0, followed by fishing for these species in those zones. An elongated strip-type body member of spiral configuration decreasing in radius of curvature toward one end thereof is provided. The strip member is of greater width than thickness and includes a generally outwardly projecting terminal end on its greater radius of curvature end extending generally axially of the spiral of the strip member. The body is constructed of resilient shape retentive, but flexible material. One longitudinal edge of the strip member comprises the inner periphery of the spiral and the other longitudinal edge of the strip member comprises the outer periphery of the spiral. The aforementioned one inner longitudinal edge of the strip is of greater thickness than the other outer longitudinal edge and the strip member tapers in thickness from the greater thickness longitudinal edge toward the lesser thickness longitudinal edge.
