Adaptive sampling alleviates aliasing by partitioning the field of view of an image sample point into depth regions. Portions of the scene are sampled within a depth region using sample rays. If a sample ray is not completely occluded in the depth region, corresponding sample rays are evaluated in adjacent depth regions. Sample rays can be recursively evaluated in further depth regions until all the subsamples intersect opaque objects or a depth limit or transparency threshold is reached. The value of an image sample point is the weighted combination of sample rays. The number of sample rays in each depth region may increase monotonically with distance along a line of sight from an image sample point for effects such as reflection, refraction, and illumination. The number of sample rays in each depth region may increase monotonically with distance from a focal plane for effects such as depth of field.

Adaptive depth of field sampling

Methods and techniques to implement a digital signal processor for avoidance of audio feedback are disclosed, in particular, audio signal processing systems that reduce the requirement for physical segregation of sound acquisition and diffusion zones. In a more general aspect, the components and techniques described herein provide a for a sound space and sound processing equipment such that sound travelling electronically in a loop through the sound processing equipment that is output into a physical sound diffusion zone, received at the input to the sound processing equipment, and then re-amplified, etc. is attenuated over that loop by frequency modification. The frequency modification is such that, at least for some signals, on each pass through the loop, the sound processing equipment will attenuate or amplify individual sub-bands of the frequency spectrum of the audio signal that is received at the input of the sound processing equipment. The frequency range of each individual sub-band is modified as it passes through the sound processing equipment, transformed into sound in the physical space, picked up again by the sound processing equipment, and then passes through again, so that the sub-band is attenuated on at least one of those passes through the sound processing equipment. The attenuation can be performed by configuring the sound processing equipment to amplify some input frequencies and shift those frequencies to other frequencies that the sound processing equipment is configured to attenuate.

Avoiding audio feedback

Small objects causing aliasing are enlarged so that they are likely to be sampled by image sampling points. The opacity of the enlarged object is reduced in proportion to the enlargement. To efficiently render partially transparent objects, such as enlarged objects, objects are sampled using sigma buffer samples instead of image sample points. For each sigma buffer sample, a corresponding portion of the object is set to either completely transparent or completely opaque. The proportion of transparent to opaque portions of the object matches or approximates the partial transparency of the object as a whole. The completely opaque portions of one or more objects are sampled with the corresponding sigma buffer samples. Aggregate values of the sigma buffer samples are determined and can be combined with the attribute values of other objects sampled with image sampling points associated with the same region as the set of sigma buffer samples.

A contribution of a geometric element's attribute to a value of the image sample is determined analytically for an analytic dimension of evaluation and using sampling for a discrete dimension of evaluation. Motion blur effects are rendered by analytically determining the proportions of shutter time during which image samples are exposed to objects. Space-time projections are determined by the geometry edges' positions at the beginning and the end of the shutter time, which define surfaces of space-time projections. The times that the sample ray of an image sample enter and leave the space-time projections specify the proportions of the image sample's shutter time during which scene geometry is exposed to image sample points. The attribute value of an image sample point is determined from values of all of the scene geometry visible to the image sample point during the shutter time, each weighted by the time that it is visible.

Hybrid analytic and sample-based rendering of motion blur in computer graphics

The present invention is a method and apparatus for compressing and decompressing data. In particular, the present invention provides a method for compressing color video data for storage on a CD-ROM for later playback on a computer system. The present invention uses an asymmetrical compression-decompression scheme that provides color compression, temporal compression, and spatial compression. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the color compression is accomplished in three stages. In the first stage, the colors are sampled from the source data. This generates a histogram that contains the colors of the source material. Next, these colors are quantized into the target colors. In the third step of the color compression, the actual colors on the film are mapped to the quantized colors. The temporal compression step specifies a target display rate. Only those pixels that have changed significantly from frame to frame are updated. A bit mask is generated for each frame and is used to target those pixels that will be updated for each frame. The spatial compression step is used to further reduce storage requirements by dividing data into pixel 'tiles.' The CD-ROM stores an index into the table so that when data is required only the index need be provided, not the tile.

Method and apparatus for compression and decompression of color data

An imaging system for providing apparatus and method for projecting a two dimensional (2D) representation of three dimensional (3D) volumes where surface boundaries and objects internal to the volumes are readily shown, and hidden surfaces and the surface boundaries themselves are accurately rendered. In the present invention, the two dimensional image produced is capable of having the same resolution as the sampling resolution of the input image image volume of interest. This is accomplished through the implementation of methods for determining 'partial volumes' of voxels. Partial voluming provides for the assignment of selected colors and opacities to different materials (or data components) represented in an image data volume based on the percentage composition of materials represented in each voxel of the image volume. Unlike prior art systems, such as those that use thresholding techniques, the imaging of the present invention has a high degree of precision and definition that is independent of image volume on a per voxel basis.

Method and apparatus for imaging volume data using voxel values

An audience response system in which each audience member is provided with a reflective device (or other radiation source) which is, for example, green on one side and red on the other side. Light from a spotlight is reflected from the reflectors and imaged by a conventional video camera. A computer receives the digitized and processed image, forms a map of the audience, and distinguishes the red from the green reflections. This data is then used by the computer to project an image onto a screen visible to the audience, the image being controlled by the red or green image reflections. The audience thus jointly controls the screen image, for instance for purposes of voting or playing a game. The system also can detect movement (direction and/or velocity) of each radiation source which data is aggregated and thereby manipulates the screen image. Also, the sources each may transmit coded information (such as Morse code or ASCII) to individually identify themselves.

Video imaging method and apparatus for audience participation

A computer database contains visual and other information of an object scene from which a television monitor or film display is created by electronically sampling points of the object scene information in the computer memory. Undesirable effects of aliasing are significantly reduced and substantially eliminated by pseudo-randomly distributing, in a particular manner, the occurrence of the point samples in space and time. Realistic depth of field is obtained in the images, corresponding to what is observed through a camera lens, by altering the sample point locations to simulate passing them through an optical aperture in a pseudo-random distribution thereacross. Further, effects of illumination, shadows, object reflection and object refraction are made more realistic by causing each sample point to pseudo-randomly select one of a predetermined number of possible ray directions.

Method and apparatus for shading an image volume so that surfaces and boundaries may be rendered to subvoxel accuracy. A gradient vector is generated for each voxel of an image volume by calculating the change in opacity across that voxel in relation to its immediate neighbors. The gradient in the X, Y and Z direction of a three-dimensional voxel array is used to define a gradient length. By multiplying the RGBA values of individual voxels by their gradient length, a image volume may be shaded so that surfaces remain, but the interiors of solids are rendered more transparent revealing additional detail. Surfaces are shaded by multiplying the RGBA values of each voxel by a shading function. A reference point for a light source illuminating the displayed image volume is defined. A light vector is chosen for each voxel, a shading function is then generated based on the angle between the gradient vector and the light vector. The shading function allows for inputs for backlighting and side lighting.
