Intrinsic gauging for tube fittings

An intrinsic gauging device for a ferrule type tube fitting of the type having a coupling nut, a coupling body and at least one ferrule, includes a precisely formed marking that has a predetermined relationship with the coupling nut when the fitting has been initially pulled-up. The marking may be realized as a precision groove or recess machined into a surface. The groove can be made more easily visually perceptible such as by roughening, knurling or coloring the surface. The groove defines an edge at a precise position that corresponds to a predetermined axial displacement of the nut relative to the body for initial pull-up. The marking may also be formed with a precise dimension such as an axial length to provide a second edge that corresponds to a predetermined axial displacement of the nut relative to the body beyond initial pull-up for fitting assemblies that are remade.

Apparatus for swaging a ferrule or ferrules onto an outer wall of a cylindrical member includes a hydraulic power section and an adapter tool. The hydraulic section is disposed within a housing, and the adapter tool is at least partly retained in the housing and also is fully removable from the housing without affecting the hydraulic power section of the apparatus. The hydraulic section includes a piston that is moved under force of hydraulic pressure applied thereto from a hydraulic pressure source. The adapter tool includes a driven swaging die that is moved from a retracted position to an extended position in response to movement of the piston. The sleeve and anvil are releasably secured together so that the adapter tool can be removed from the housing as a unitary assembly. Size changes can be accommodated by removing a first adapter tool of a given size and replacing it with a second adapter tool of a different size. This changeover can be implemented without any disassembly or compromise of the hydraulic section. The apparatus also provide a visual indication that a swaging operation is completed by action of an indicator knob that axially pops out of the back end of the housing at the end of a swaging operation.

Apparatus for swaging ferrules

An intrinsic gauging device for a ferrule type tube fitting of the type having a coupling nut, a coupling body and at least one ferrule, includes a precisely formed marking on the coupling body that is visually perceptible when the coupling is in a finger tight position, and that is covered or visually imperceptible or otherwise has a predetermined relationship with the coupling nut when the fitting has been initially pulled-up. In a preferred form, the marking is realized as a precision groove or recess machined into a surface of the coupling body. The groove can be made more easily visually perceptible such as by roughening or knurling the surface, or coloring the surface, for example. A phase controlled sequential gripping tube fitting for gripping a tube therein, the fitting comprising a rear ferrule shaped to receive the tube therein, the rear ferrule having a nose portion and a central body. The tube fitting further comprises a front ferrule having an axially-extending rear portion radially outwardly spaced from the rear ferrule, whereby when the rear ferrule is urged axially in a first direction the rear ferrule grips the tube, and whereby the rear portion of the front ferrule reduces buckling of the rear ferrule.

Phase controlled sequential gripping tube fitting

A tube fitting for joining resinous plastic tubing comprises a fitting body having an opening with a conically shaped camming mouth. A tube extends into the opening. A first ferrule is slidably received on the tube and has an exterior surface which faces the camming mouth. A second ferrule is also slidably received on the tube at a location outwardly of the opening and the first ferrule. The second ferrule has a nose portion which engages the first ferrule adjacent the tube and is snap fitted within a recess formed circumferentially of the tube prior to association of the tube with the fitting. The nose portion of the second ferrule is engaged in the recess in axial driving engagement with the tube prior to make-up of said fitting. A nut member is threadedly engaged with the body for driving the first and second ferrules into the camming mouth during fitting make-up.

Tube fitting

A device for swaging a ferrule onto the periphery of a cylindrical member includes a first piston mounted for reciprocation within a body and an anvil member drivingly connected to the first piston. The anvil member has a recess at one end to receive an end of the cylindrical member. A camming device is associated with the anvil member for camming a ferrule carried on the end of the cylindrical member into tight peripheral engagement. A second piston is mounted for reciprocation within the body in spaced relation to the first piston. A movement of the second piston is necessary in order to move the first piston. Located between the first and second pistons are an unexpandible chamber which contains a constant amount of fluid and a spring for resiliently urging the pistons away from each other.

A connector assembly for permitting sealed passage of tubular lines through portions between separate chambers comprises a first fitting body having a through passage for connection to one of the chambers. The through passage has an outwardly open end with a circumferentially continuous conical mouth. A first rigid disk member with a conical outer surface is received in the conical mouth. Aligned with the first disk member is a second disk member and there are aligned openings formed through both disk members to permit the tubular lines to pass therethrough. Conical chambers are formed about the openings in the first disk member with ferrules positioned therein to closely encircle the tubular lines. A coupling acts to drive the second disk toward the first disk to drive said ferrules into the conical chambers to thereby produce sealing of the ferrules with the lines and to apply force to the first disk to produce sealing between the first disk and the conical mouth.

Connector for multiple lines

A gauge for fittings of the type including a coupling nut having a threaded internal opening and adapted to encircle a cylindrical member and a ferrule positioned on the cylindrical member, the gauge being used for determining the pull up of the ferrule and the swaging of the cylindrical member, includes an indicating unit having a readout for showing whether the swaging of the cylindrical member is within tolerances. A piston is movably mounted on the indicating unit and is operatively connected to the readout. The piston includes a body having a bore and an external threaded area on the body circumferentially of the bore to threadedly engage the threaded internal opening of the coupling nut carried on the cylindrical member. The piston further includes a section within the bore for aligning the cylindrical member with the bore and for limiting the extent of movement of the cylindrical member into the bore. A master is provided for calibrating the gauge. The gauge is used in a method for determining the swaging that a cylindrical member has undergone.

Gauge for coupling component

A device for swaging a ferrule onto the periphery of a cylindrical member includes a piston mounted for reciprocation within a body and an anvil member drivingly connected to the piston and having a recess in one end to receive the end of the cylindrical member. A camming body is associated with the anvil member for camming a ferrule carried on the end of the cylindrical member into tight peripheral engagement therewith. A gauge device is associated with the camming body for measuring the movement of the camming body relative to the body housing the piston. The camming device includes an articulated signal member having a first arm and a second arm one end of which is secured to the end of the first arm. The second arm is selectively pivotable about the first arm and a resilient spring is used to urge the second arm to one end position in relation to the first arm. A biasing member is used for moving the signal member from a first to a second position. The signal member is held in the first position until a predetermined amount of relative movement has taken place between the camming body and the piston housing body. At that time, the signal member is caused to move suddenly to the second position under the action of the biasing member.
