A method for updating a vehicle reference speed for a vehicle is disclosed. The method includes increasing brake pressure to at least one wheel of the plurality of wheels and determining, via an electronic control unit, that a first wheel speed of the at least one wheel is less than a second wheel speed of another wheel of the plurality of wheels. The method also includes estimating the vehicle reference speed of the vehicle based upon the first wheel speed of the at least one wheel.

A method is disclosed for validating operation of a secondary braking system (SBS) of a vehicle having a plurality of brakes, by controlling the SBS and a primary braking system (PBS) of the vehicle. The method may involve using the PBS to generate a first predetermined target braking pressure in the PBS for at least a first one of the brakes, while using the SBS to generate a second predetermined target braking pressure in the SBS for at least a second one of the brakes. Actual and anticipated performance characteristics of a braking component associated with the vehicle are then observed and compared, and from the comparison a determination is made whether the SBS is operating properly.

A method for mitigating sway of a trailer being towed by a leading vehicle is disclosed. The method may involve using a controller of the vehicle to determine when a trailer sway condition has arisen that requires a mitigating action. The controller may be used to actuate a plurality of brakes of the vehicle, or to increase braking pressure being applied by a driver of the vehicle, when the trailer is detected as swaying toward a centerline of the vehicle from one side or another of the vehicle centerline. The present disclosure relates to a system for real time control of a wheel slip of each slipping wheel of a pair of wheels associated with an axle of a motor vehicle, simultaneously and independently with real time explicit control of said motor vehicle's acceleration provided by each non-slipping wheel associated with the axle. The system makes use of a total controller and an asymmetric controller associated with the axle of the vehicle for generating two torque signals used to control the total and asymmetric dynamics respectively of the axle, and a distributor for distributing the two said torque signals into available actuators' targets. The two said controllers each contain feedback and feed forward control elements, is operable to sense wheel slippage condition of each wheel on the axle, and augments the feedback and feed forward control based on the sensed wheel slippage conditions.

The method may also involve determining if the amplitude of the current signal exceeds a predetermined percentage of the amplitude of the previous signal. Power hop is detected when the combined period and amplitude of the current signal exceeds the first predetermined value as well as the second predetermined value, and possibly also when the amplitude of the current signal exceeds the predetermined percentage of the amplitude of the previous signal.
