An electronic controller is configured to provide control signals to the control terminals of the semiconductor switches of the primary converter and the secondary converter based on a commanded current or target output current; the electronic controller is configured to adjust the phase angle(s), between a respective pairs of semiconductor switches of the primary converter and second converter based on a deadtime compensation module responsive to a current error or current difference between the target output current and the observed output current. A low-pass filter facilitates estimation of the current error for compensation in the commanded current.

In an example embodiment, a system includes a plurality of inverters configured to operate in at least one of a charging mode or a drive mode, a plurality of motors and at least one controller configured to selectively couple the plurality of inverters to the plurality of motors during a drive mode, and selectively couple at least one of the inverters to an alternating current (AC) source during the charging mode and decouple the at least one of the inverters from the plurality of motors during the charging mode.

A control module comprises software instructions for execution by an electronic data processor. An inductance estimator is configured to estimate direct inductance and quadrature inductance associated with the electric machine based on a first set of equations that assume constant rotor resistance and constant magnetic flux. A torque estimator is configured to estimate an observed torque associated with a rotor of the electric machine based a commanded direct-axis voltage and a commanded quadrature-axis voltage, where the observed torque is proportional to the observed power consumption of the electric machine. A pulse-width-modulation (PWM) module is configured to provide pulse-width modulated signals to the electric machine based on the commanded direct-axis voltage and a commanded quadrature-axis voltage. A back-electromotive force adjustment is derived from an estimated, observed torque and a commanded torque.

A system and method for controlling an electric machine via an inverter comprises an speed estimator that is configured to estimate a rotor speed of an electric motor to determine whether to control the inverter to operate the electric motor in a first mode or a second mode. For example, the first mode comprises a current-frequency control mode and the second mode comprises a back electromagnetic force (BEMF) mode. An electronic data processor or controller is configured to determine a first (current) command associated with a first mode of operating the electric motor, if the estimated rotor speed is a less than a speed threshold. The electronic data processor or controller is configured to determine a second (current) command associated with a second mode of operating the electric motor if the estimated rotor speed is equal to or greater than the speed threshold.

System and method of a robust startup and stop scheme for position sensorless control of an electric machine

An electronic data processor comprises a data storage device in communication with the electronic data processor. A control module stored in the data storage device, the control module comprising software instructions for execution by the electronic data processor to change dynamically the fundamental switching frequency of the control signals to reduce electromagnetic noise within a target frequency band if the fundamental switching frequency is equal to or greater than a threshold fundamental switching frequency.

An improved power system architecture for a hybrid electric vehicle includes a power control unit including a motor inverter, a generator inverter, and a DC-to-DC converter, and vehicle power management (VPM) circuitry directly connected to each of the motor inverter, generator inverter, and DC-to-DC converter. In this arrangement, communication timing is greatly reduced, thereby allowing for feedforward control of the motor inverter, generator inverter, and DC-to-DC converter. The feedforward control enables the VPM circuitry to predict current influx or draw by a motor and determine the corresponding currents to provide to or from the generator and battery prior to or simultaneously with the actual current influx or draw by the motor. This improves vehicle dynamics and responsiveness, as well as enables complete recapture of braking currents and eliminates the need for a brake chopper resistor, thereby improving overall vehicle efficiency.
