An apparatus and system are provided for delivering communication services such as video, data and telephony services to individual residential units. According to one embodiment, an optical network terminal (ONT) for providing communication services to a single residential unit comprises a passive optical network interface (PI) circuit, a residential service interface (RSI) circuit, and a power unit. The PI circuit receives optical signals from an optical fiber and transmits optical signals onto the optical fiber. The PI circuit is adapted to convert received optical signals containing voice information to electrical voice ATM cells, received optical signals containing data information to electrical data ATM cells, and received optical signals containing video signals to electrical video signals. The PI circuit is also adapted to convert electrical voice ATM cells and electrical data ATM cells to optical signals for transmission over the optical fiber.

Fiber to the home broadband home unit

An apparatus and system are provided for delivering communication services such as video, data and telephony services to individual residential units. According to one embodiment, an optical network terminal (ONT) for providing communication services to a single residential unit comprises a passive optical network interface (PI) circuit, a residential service interface (RSI) circuit, and a power unit. The PI circuit receives optical signals from an optical fiber and transmits optical signals onto the optical fiber. The PI circuit is adapted to convert received optical signals containing voice information to electrical voice ATM cells, received optical signals containing data information to electrical data ATM cells, and received optical signals containing video signals to electrical video signals. The PI circuit is also adapted to convert electrical voice ATM cells and electrical data ATM cells to optical signals for transmission over the optical fiber; The RSI circuit that is adapted to convert the electrical voice ATM cells to a telephony format suitable for use at the residential unit and the electrical data ATM cells to a network format suitable for use at the residential unit. The RSI circuit is also adapted to convert telephony format information received from the residential unit to voice ATM cells and network format information received from the residential unit to data ATM cells. The power unit provides power for use in the PI circuit and the RSI circuit. The power unit includes an AC/DC converter for converting ac power received from the residential unit to dc power for use in the ONT and backup batteries for providing power when there is an interruption of the ac power.

A timing architecture for a delivery unit that interfaces telecommunications media to a switching matrix. The delivery unit is functionally partitioned into a number of application modules. Transport between the modules is handled by a bus control module, with ingress buses from the application modules to the bus control module and egress buses from the bus control module to the application module. The bus control module also distributes system timing signals to each application module on these buses. The application modules each have a common bus interface that derives common local timing signals. They also each have a common local timebase that derives additional local timing signals. The bus interface is also used to deliver synchronization signals back to the bus control module.

A system for interfacing with a data bus is provided. The system includes an egress bus data interface that can receive a single incoming stream of STM data and ATM data. The egress bus data interface transmits a single incoming stream of STM data, and a single incoming stream of ATM. The system also includes an ingress bus data interface. The ingress bus interface receives a single outgoing stream of STM data and a single outgoing stream of ATM data. The STM data and ATM data are transmitted in a single outgoing stream.

System and method for data bus interface

A bus control module for a delivery unit, which interfaces an optical fiber network to a switching matrix. The bus control module controls transport of control data and network data between various application modules of the delivery unit. The control data and network data are carried as datagrams on ingress links from the application modules and on egress links to the application modules.

A system for selecting one of two or more parallel planes of data is provided. The system includes a first data buffer that is connected to a first data bus that carries a stream of datagrams. The first data buffer receives and stores datagrams from the first data bus. The system also includes a second data buffer that is connected to a second data bus that carries a stream of datagrams. The second data buffer receives and stores datagrams from the second data bus. A selection controller connected to the first data buffer and the second data buffer analyzes the datagrams stored in the first and second data buffers, and selects one of the datagrams to be the primary datagram.

System and method for plane selection

A data bus controller is provided. The data bus controller comprises an ingress interface that receives single data streams of encoded data. A multiplexer is connected to the ingress interface and combines the single data streams into a broadcast data stream of encoded data. An egress interface connected to the multiplexer transmits the broadcast data stream. An arbiter is connected to the multiplexer. The arbiter generates control data for controlling the multiplexing of the single data streams and transmits control data to the multiplexer.

System and apparatus for telecommunications bus control

A data bus interface circuit is provided. The data bus interface circuit includes interface circuitry that can receive, store, and transmit data. Egress bus input circuitry is connected to the interface circuitry. The egress bus input circuitry receives incoming STM and ATM data from a first egress data bus. STM egress bus input circuitry is connected to the interface circuitry. The STM egress bus input circuitry transmits the incoming STM data over a second egress data bus. ATM egress bus input circuitry connected to the interface circuitry transmits the incoming ATM data over a third egress data bus. STM ingress bus input circuitry receives outgoing synchronous transfer mode data, and ATM ingress bus input circuitry receives outgoing asynchronous transfer mode data. Ingress bus output circuitry connected to the interface circuitry transmits outgoing STM and outgoing ATM data over a third ingress data bus.

System and apparatus for data bus interface

A grooming device (18) includes an inbound crosspoint switch (30) that combines proprietary STS-1 signals from any of a plurality of optical terminators (16) into a grouped set of output signals for transmission to a broadband matrix subsystem through dedicated matrix interfaces (20). The inbound crosspoint switch (30) includes a crosspoint matrix (72) that receives each of the plurality of input signal lines at each output signal port and selects which input signal line is connected to which output signal port as determined by a microprocessor controller (78). Each output signal port has a register (90) for storing information as to which input signal line is to be connected to that port. A decoder (92) generates a control signal from the information stored in the register (90) to drive a multiplexer (94) for selection of the appropriate input signal line.
