An integrated wavelength division multiplexer is described. The integrated wavelength division multiplexer may include a first waveguide core defining a first propagation axis and configured to guide light of a first wavelength and light of a second wavelength, and a second waveguide core defining a second propagation axis and configured to guide the light of the second wavelength. A first portion of the second propagation axis for which the first waveguide core and second waveguide core may be overlapping is oriented at a non-zero angle relative to the first propagation axis. The first waveguide core and second waveguide core may be configured relative to each other to adiabatically couple the light of the second wavelength between the first and second waveguide cores.

Wavelength division multiplexer

A method includes providing a sacrificial wafer, contacting the sacrificial wafer to a photonic device wafer, and bonding the sacrificial wafer to the photonic device wafer. The sacrificial wafer includes a substrate and an electro-optical material strip disposed within a dielectric matrix. The photonic device wafer includes a photonic device die, and the electro-optical material strip is disposed proximate to the photonic device die. A photonic device structure includes a photonic device wafer and a sacrificial wafer. The photonic device structure includes a device wafer substrate and a photonic device die fabricated in a device wafer dielectric layer. The sacrificial wafer includes a sacrificial wafer substrate and an electro-optical material strip embedded in a sacrificial wafer dielectric matrix. The sacrificial wafer dielectric matrix is bonded to the device wafer dielectric layer, and the electro-optical material strip is disposed proximate to the photonic device die.

Method for integration of electro-optical materials in a photonic integrated circuit

Methods of fabricating electro-optical modulators and the resulting electro-optical modulators are described herein. In some embodiments, a method comprises defining a waveguide having a core region, implanting dopants into a contact region of the waveguide, and diffusing the dopants laterally toward the core region. In some embodiments, a method comprises implanting n-type and p-type dopants into respective first and second contact regions of the optical waveguide and annealing the optical waveguide to induce lateral diffusion of the n-type and p-type dopants toward a center of the optical waveguide. In some embodiments, an electro-optical modulator comprises a waveguide comprising a contact region and a core region, and the waveguide has a dopant concentration that decreases from the contact region to the core region according to a super-linear curve. Methods and resulting structures described herein provide desirable electrical resistance and low overlap between dopants and optical signals.

In one aspect, the disclosure relates to an apparatus including a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) including an optical network including V optical output channels and U optical input ports, wherein a selectable subset of the U optical input ports can be connected to L lasers, wherein L is less than or equal to U, and wherein the PIC is operable to output light on some or all of the V optical output channels in response to different number of active lasers connected to the U optical input ports.

A method for scanning a scene is disclosed. According to the method, light is transmitted by a transmitter through a transmitter surface grating array, as a first elliptical pattern in a first lateral direction. Light is received by a receiver through a receiver surface grating array, from an area of a second elliptical pattern. The received light is reflected from the first elliptical pattern. The first elliptical pattern is orthogonal to the second elliptical pattern. The first elliptical pattern overlaps with the second elliptical pattern.

In part, in one aspect, the disclosure relates to a method for passivating a waveguide of an optical circuit. The method includes etching a suspended waveguide in the optical circuit; the suspended waveguide having a top surface, a bottom surface, and side surfaces; and covering the top surface and side surfaces of the suspended waveguide with a passivation coating having a thickness that ranges from between about 10 nm to about 20 nm. In one embodiment, the method further includes removing one or more coatings from a portion of the optical circuit. The disclosure also relates to various passivated optical silicon circuit embodiments.

Integrated wavelength selectors are described. The wavelength selector may include silicon nitride ring resonator disposed vertically between a heater and a temperature sensor. Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) having a resistivity-engineered substrate to suppress radio-frequency (RF) common-mode signals. In some embodiments, a semiconductor substrate is provided that comprises two portions having different levels of resistivity to provide both suppression of common mode signals, and reduction of RF absorption loss for non-common mode RF signals. In such embodiments, a bottom portion of the semiconductor substrate has a low resistivity to suppress common mode via RF absorption, while a top portion of the semiconductor substrate that is adjacent to conductors in the IC has a high resistivity to reduce RF loss.

In part, the disclosure relates to system. The system includes a polarization diversified wavelength demultiplexer (WDM). The polarization diversified wavelength demultiplexer includes a polarization beam splitter configured to output a first polarized signal and a second polarized signal based on an input signal; and a wavelength demultiplexer (WDM) having two inputs that are connected to the two outputs of the polarization beam splitter, and configured to output signals with a single set of outputs that carry signals of both polarizations, based on the first polarized signal from the first input and the second polarized signal from the second input.

In part, in one aspect, the disclosure relates to a system including an integrated optical multiplexer. The integrated optical multiplexer may include a plurality of optical inputs configured and constructed to receive input optical signals; two or more stages of multiplexing in a cascading configuration, wherein the two or more stages of multiplexing are divided into wavelength stages and a last stage, wherein each of the wavelength stages combine subsets of input optical signals by wavelength, the last stage combines input optical signals by polarization using a polarization beam combiner, and at a combined output of the integrated optical multiplexer a first subset of the input optical signals have a different polarization than a second subset of the input optical signals.

Disclosed herein are methods, structures, apparatus and devices for the termination of unused waveguide ports in planar photonic integrated circuits with doped waveguides such that free-carrier absorption therein may advantageously absorb any undesired optical power resulting in a significant reduction of stray light and resulting reflections.
