Users access content using a variety of formats, where some formats provide stronger encryption or protections than others. Content transmitted over open protocols may expose content to unauthorized third parties or enable unauthorized use of the content. The content may be protected by converting the content to a set of instructions on a user device, where the instructions correlate characters to identifications and outlines of the characters with instructions for rendering the characters. Different segments of content may have different mappings between characters, identifications, and outlines to add time or resource use to attempts to reverse engineer the instructions.

Content protection for device rendering

Images in e-book and other electronic media content can be automatically enhanced for viewing on client devices, using various image categories, attributes, and expected qualities. Should systems and methods determine, based on the categories and attributes, that a given media object does not satisfy at least one rule for optimized presentation of the content on a particular client device, an updated presentation of the content can be generated, possibly in accordance with a predetermined specification. The updating may be in the form of image enhancement through adjustment of the size of the images in the media object. Machine learning schema can assist in recognizing images by category, importance and readability scoring, and in adjusting the images for optimal viewing.

Automated optimization of displayed electronic content imagery

A method and system to provide fonts for electronic publications is described. An example method includes receiving a request for an electronic publication from a user device, retrieving a font identifier of a font from the electronic publication, providing the electronic publication to the user device, determining, based on the font identifier, that at least one font file of the font is not stored on the user device, and providing the at least one font file of the font to the user device.

Providing fonts for electronic publications

In some examples, additional content is provided with the main content of a content item presented on an electronic device. For instance, an occurrence of an event may call for presentation of an additional content portion concurrently with the main content of the content item. The additional content portion may interact with other additional content portions, the main content portion, and/or user inputs. In some cases, the additional content portion can be implemented by one or more plug-in modules having designated roles for providing respective different types of additional content. Accordingly, some examples provide a cross-platform module that receives events, selects one or more plug-ins in response to a received event, and causes the one or more plug-ins to perform a desired action for rendering and compositing additional content portions or features to be presented with the main content of a content item.

A processing device in a user device receives an electronic document comprising text in a first font of a plurality of fonts and a hint tag set comprising a suggested order of hint types for the first font, wherein a first hint type is arranged in the suggested order according to a corresponding quality score for the first hint type, the quality score indicating how closely characters from a simulated presentation of the text match a predefined presentation of the characters. The processing device determines a hint type for the first font from the suggested order of hint types and according to a capability of the user device and utilizes the hint type for a presentation of the text of the electronic document.

A rendering optimizer captures content engagement feedback associated with a first interval during which electronic content is presented with a first set of rendering parameter values. The rendering optimizer adjusts at least one rendering parameter value of the first set of rendering parameter values by a step amount in a first direction to create a second set of rendering parameter values and captures content engagement feedback associated with a second interval during which the electronic content is presented with the second set of rendering parameter values. The rendering optimizer further adjusts the rendering parameter values to determine they result in an improvement in reading immersion.

In some examples, a computing device may receive a content item for formatting, the content item including at least one scalable object to be rendered with a portion of content during presentation of the content item on an electronic device. The computing device may convert a complex shape element in the scalable object to at least one path command that includes a sequence of one or more paths that correspond to the complex shape element. The computing device may format the at least one path command for parsing by a content parser of the electronic device. Further, the computing device may associate the at least one path command with the portion of content so that the at least one path command will be rendered in place of rendering information for the scalable object that was originally included with the content item.

A computing device receives an electronic publication. The computing device determines a layout for the electronic publication based on a display format in which the electronic publication is to be presented. The computing device converts the electronic publication into a streamable format based on the layout. The computing device receives a request to access the electronic publication from a user device. Converting digital publications into a format for sending to a user device

A method and system to provide font hints for text is described. An example method includes identifying a plurality of fonts of the text, determining a suggested order of hint types for each font based on rendering context, and sending, to a user device, the fonts and a suggested order of hint types for each font.

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are disclosed for dynamic contrast adjustment for glyph rendering. Example methods may include rendering a first glyph associated with a font in a first font size, increasing a first contrast of the first glyph in the first font size by adjusting a first grayscale value associated with the first glyph in the first font size to generate an adjusted first grayscale value, and storing the adjusted first grayscale value in a grayscale mapping table associated with the font, the grayscale mapping table comprising a default grayscale value for the first glyph in a second font size. Example methods may include generating a font file comprising the first glyph and the grayscale mapping table.

A user device receives a user input that causes an electronic publication to have a modified state. The user device generates data that, when used to render the electronic publication, causes the electronic publication to have the modified state. The user device transmits the data to a server.

Synchronizing electronic publications between user devices

Devices and techniques to incrementally update content associated with an electronic publication are described. A patch generation module may be configured to generate patch data files comprising incremental changes associated with the electronic publication. A differential patch module located on a client device may be configured to obtain the patch data files. The differential patch module may also be configured to compare the patch data files and the electronic publication and identify the differences between the files. Additionally, the differential patch module may be configured to update the changes in the patch data files with the content of the electronic publication. Accordingly, the electronic publication may be updated to include the changes in the patch data files.

Differential patching of content

Systems and methods are provided for optimizing a glyph-based file. Individual components may be identified within glyphs of a file. Each identified component within a glyph may be a portion of the glyph, and may be a joint component or disjoint component. Groupings of components may then be determined, where the groupings are determined based at least in part by identifying similarly shaped components. A representative component may then be selected from each grouping. Composite glyphs may be generated and stored in an optimized file, where each composite glyph includes a reference to at least one representative component.
