An endomedullary nail for the treatment of proximal femur fractures, comprising an elongate body () having a proximal portion () and a distal portion (). The proximal portion () has a first and a second hole () for a respective cephalic screw (), each having a transversal axis to the axis of the proximal portion (). The first hole () is split into two passages each having a respective axis (A, B) with a predetermined angle relationship with respect to the axis (C) of the second hole (). The passages () are arranged to be selectively engaged by a respective cephalic screw ().

Endomedullary nail for the treatment of proximal femur fractures

An intramedullary cavity nail for the treatment of proximal femoral fractures, comprises a solid elongate body with a proximal portion (2) having at least one transverse bore for accommodating a corresponding screw (9, 10) for stabilizing the femoral neck, the proximal portion being joined to a distal portion (3) having at least one distal bore (16) for accommodating at least one diaphysis screw for stabilizing the distal part of the femur. The proximal portion (2) has a substantially constant diameter (.phi..sub.p) adapted to be stably anchored in a relatively limited length bore of the femur for reducing blood losses, while said distal portion (3) has a substantially constant diameter (.phi..sub.d) which is less than that of said proximal portion, for ease of insertion in the medullary canal of the femur without any drilling. The proximal and distal portions (2, 3) are substantially rectilinear and form between themselves a predetermined deviation angle (.beta.) in a lateral plane. The proximal portion (2) has a pair of inclined bores (7, 8) adapted for accommodating respective cephalic screws (9, 10) for the fixing of the femoral head. A template (20) with provision for angularly keyed engagement to the proximal end of the nail, has alignment bores for stabilized guidance of drill bits with each of the respective transverse bores of the intramedullary nail.

An external trochanter splint, especially for surgical stabilization of femoral pertrochanter and subtrochanter fractures, comprises a pair of clamps (2,3) each with its own longitudinal axis (a,b). One of these clamps (2) is designed for the movable locking of a first group of bone screws or bolts (V) inserted into the mass of the trochanter, the other (3) is designed for the movable locking of a second group of bone screws or bolts (W) inserted into the proximal diaphysis of the femur. The two clamps are connected together in side-by-side relation via an intermediate connecting member (4). First provision is made for immobilizing a selected angle of divergence (.alpha.) between the longitudinal axes (a,b) and second provision is made for immobilizing a selected angle of rotation of at least one of the said clamps (3) about its own longitudinal axis (b). Intermediate member (4) comprises a central body (21) connected to clamps (2,3) via a pair of rotatable joints with corresponding axes of rotation (c,d) which are substantially at right angles. In alternative embodiments, the bone screws or bolts of the clamp along the trochanter can be immobilized along convergent alignments; the joint between the two clamps has one or more frustoconical contact surfaces; and the clamp to the femur is subdivided into two parts which can be angularly oriented about the longitudinal axis of the clamp.

External trochanter splint

The present invention relates to an external splint which is particularly suitable for application to the pelvis, comprisng a central body consisting of a plurality of members which can be connected together telescopically and do not rotate with respect to each other about their own axes, two screw holding clamps anchored with ball joints to the free ends of the central body and a removable contractor/extender device. An articulated member 22-23, 22-47-23 or 22-50-51-23 consisting of two or more parts can be inserted between parts 20, 21 of the central body allowing the said parts 20, 21 to rotate in a single plane containing the longitudinal axes of parts 20, 21 and at right angles to the plane passing through axes 25, 26 of the seats for the pins of the contractor/extender device. This rotation takes place around at least one of the pivot pins 24 which couples together the parts of the said articulated member.

External splint

The invention is a self-gradually locking chuck for drills and similar devices. It is particularly suitable for portable drills in surgical use. The chuck has a cylindrical sleeve that can be fixed axially to the shaft of a drill and predominantly tapering ferrule with lobes. The ferrule can be axially engaged with the sleeve. Means for centering a tool and at least one spring are located within a hollow space in the sleeve. The chuck also has a mounting with a passage and holes for housing jaws. The mounting and the ferrule are axially movable with respect to each other and the sleeve. Jaws, located in the holes and urged toward the axis of the chuck by the lobes, hold a tool that has been inserted between the jaws. The chuck further has an annular ring which can be screwed onto an externally threaded portion of the mounting projecting from the ferrule. The annular ring serves to engage the tool in a locked condition to prevent accidental release of the tool by the chuck.

Self-gradually locking chuck

A self-gradually locking chuck for drills or similar devices particularly suitable for portable drills used in surgery. It includes a cylindrical sleeve which can be coaxially fixed to a rotating shaft, a ferrule having a conical section provided internally with lobes, a cylindrical portion at one of its ends for engagement with said sleeve and a cylindrical portion at the other end. A first mounting, perforated longitudinally by a hole, includes a central portion having locking jaws which are movable in holes in a direction convergent upon the axis of the chuck and two second mountings opposite to the central body. A spring and centering device are provided. A cylindrical ferrule is threaded to a part of the first mounting as it projects from the first-mentioned ferrule. The first mounting and ferrule move axially in relation to each other and in relation to the cylindrical sleeve in which the ferrule can be releasably secured to the cylindrical ferrule by a retaining device. The second mountings are releasably secured to the sleeve by a retaining device.

The invention contemplates an orthopedic axial-fixation device wherein an extended range of body-length adjustment is achieved using three mutually telescoping members which are keyed against relative rotation, thereby preserving the selectively clamped orientation of pin mounts having ball-joint connection to the ends of the body. Separate selective clamping is available for securing a given extended relation of inner and intermediate body members and for securing a given extended relation of the intermediate and outer body members. Jacking mechanism for precision length adjustment of the body also uses three mutually telescoping threaded members so configurated that rotation of one of these threaded members is operative to provide jack expansion or retraction which serves the fullest possible range of body-length adjustability.

External axial fixation device

The invention contemplates orthopedic external minifixation apparatus comprising two articulated members having two clamps, each of which is carried by a different one of the articulated members. The articulating connection between members includes provision for simple and rapid alignment of the articulation axis with the articulation axis of the joint between two bones to be treated, thereby permitting early functional re-education and reduction of healing time. In its preferred form, several embodiments are disclosed.

Articulated mini external fixation device

Apparatus for the external setting or securing of the parts of a fractured bone, comprising an elongate central body member comprised of two parts mutually displaceable parallel to the longitudinal axis of said member, whereby each part of the central body member supports a clamping device for the pins to be inserted into a part of the bone. The two mutually displaceable parts are engaged by a pressing and tensioning device causing the mutual longitudinal displacement of the part. When the pins are inserted in the bone parts to be pressed together, the pressing and tensioning device is actuated until the two bone sections abut against each other at the required pressure. Then the securing devices fix the two parts of the central body member into their position. Subsequently, the pressing and tensioning device is removed from the central body member since it is no longer required. For reliable guidance the two parts of the central body member are telescopically inserted one within the other and universal joints are provided between the central body member and the clamping devices for compensation. These universal joints after being mounted on the bone to be put in splints are adapted to be fixed by fixing devices, so that a completely stable position of the whole apparatus is provided. The pins to be inserted into the bone parts for reliable anchorage, in view of the tractive forces occurring at least in the section of the pin insertable in the bone, are provided with an external thread.
