A stacker module includes a lift table, a stacker configured to place sheets that are successively supplied thereto onto the top of a stack forming on the lift table, a controller configured to lower the lift table as the stack grows, a height-adjustable eject table, and an eject mechanism configured to transfer a completed stack from the lift table onto the eject table. The eject mechanism is height-adjustable for transferring stacks onto the eject table in different height positions of the lift table.

Sheet stacker module

A sheet stacking apparatus includes a sheet alignment mechanism configured for aligning a sheet in a predetermined reference position; a gripper arrangement configured to grip the aligned sheet at at least two spaced-apart points of the sheet and to release the sheet on a stack; and a holder configured to hold the sheet in position on the stack while the gripper arrangement releases the sheet. The gripper arrangement is movable along a predetermined trajectory for moving the sheet from the reference position to a stacking position.

During flipping sheets may fold upon themselves under the influence of gravity. To prevent a sheet stacker is provided with a support device for supporting an inner surface of the sheet during flipping, the support device comprising a plurality of flexible fingers elements of different length, each configured to support a different inner area of the sheet during its flipping motion.

A method is provided for controlling a web in a printing apparatus The printing apparatus includes a transport assembly for moving the web through a transport path along a printing unit for printing an image onto a print area of the web. The method includes feeding the web from a supply roll through the transport path to the transport assembly; and switching the printing apparatus to a ready-to-print mode, wherein the printing unit does not print an image on the web and the web is maintained ready to be printed on. In a printing mode after the ready-to print mode, the following steps are performed: moving the web through the transport path in a transport direction along the printing unit by the transport assembly; and printing the image onto the print area of the web by the printing unit. The image is printed by applying an image material, which solidifies on the web during the printing step. The ready-to-print mode includes the step of: operating the transport assembly to prevent a deformation of the print area of the web in the transport path, while maintaining the web in the ready-to-print mode. The web is maintained ready to print while preventing a deformation of the print area of the web in the transport path.

Method for controlling a web in a printing apparatus

In a method for high speed printing of web-based media, a medium is pulled along a media transport path to a pulling transport mechanism. The orientation of the medium with respect to the media transport path is sensed and this orientation is compared to a reference orientation to detect an orientation error. If an orientation error is detected, one or more of the following steps is performed: adjusting a print job for an image to be printed on the web medium; adjusting the transport speed; emitting a communication signal; and stopping the pulling transport mechanism and the image forming unit. It is the insight of the inventor that productivity may be increased by allowing a 'tight winding' printing system to start printing at relatively high speed and reduce this speed only when significantly large deviations in the orientation of the web are detected.

Web medium orientation detection

The present invention provides a guide device for guiding print medium onto a take-up roll in a printing system. The guide device comprises a first guide member presenting a substantially planar surface for limiting or preventing lateral deviation of a printed medium output from the printing system as the medium moves along a transport path towards a take-up roll for winding or taking up a length of the medium. The first guide member is stationary in use. A position of the first guide member is adjustable in a direction transverse to the transport path for setting the position to limit or prevent lateral deviation of the medium along the transport path. The guide device further comprises a second guide member presenting a support surface configured and arranged to support the medium thereon as the medium travels along the transport path towards the take-up roll. The first guide member and the second guide member are preferably integrally formed as a guide unit. Further, the invention provides a printing system which incorporates such a guide device.

Guide device for guiding a printed medium onto a take-up roll in a printing system

A printing system comprises a first bearing support for a first media roll of a first print medium and a second bearing support for a second media roll of a second print medium. Said first and second bearing supports are spaced apart from one another. A first print transport path extends from the first bearing support from the first media roll to a main transport path of the printing system. A second print transport path extends from the second bearing support to the main transport path of the printing system. An attachment transport path extends between the first and the second bearing support. The attachment transport path allows both print media to be brought together and attached to one another. Thereby, a relatively stiffer medium may be attached as a leader section to a relatively weaker medium.

A vacuum platen for media sheets has a sheet support wall formed with a plurality of perforations and a number of chambers formed on a bottom side of the sheet support wall. Each of the chambers is directly connected to a vacuum source. Each chamber contains an acoustic barrier member arranged to divide the chamber into at least two sub-chambers such that the sub-chambers are in fluid communication with one another and have overlapping contours when seen in a direction normal to the plane of the sheet support wall.

A printer is provided for forming a phase change inkjet image on a print substrate. The printer includes a sheet transport unit for advancing the sheet along a print station. The sheet transport unit includes a sheet support platen, a sheet attraction mechanism and a feed mechanism. The sheet support platen includes a print surface for supporting a contact side of the print substrate. The sheet attraction mechanism is arranged for attracting the print substrate to the print surface. The feed mechanism is arranged for advancing the print substrate in a transport direction over the print surface, wherein the feed mechanism is arranged upstream of the print surface. The print station includes a print head assembly, the print head assembly being arranged for providing ink droplets for forming the phase change inkjet image on a process side of the print substrate, the print substrate being arranged on a print area of the print surface, the process side being opposite to the contact side. The print surface has an average surface roughness Ra being in the range of 1 micron to 4 micron.

The present invention relates to a printer for forming a phase change inkjet image. The printer comprises a platen comprising a print surface, an advancing mechanism adapted for moving a print substrate in a transport direction over the print surface and a print station adapted for providing the phase change inkjet image on a first surface of the print substrate in a print area of the print surface. The advancing mechanism comprises a plurality of feed nips, said plurality of feed nips being arranged upstream of the print surface. Each of said plurality of feed nips comprising a feed roller which comprises a main rotational axis, wherein each main rotational axis of said plurality of feed nips is aligned with respect to each other in a second direction, which second direction is substantially perpendicular to the transport direction. The advancing mechanism further comprises a star wheel. Said star wheel is arranged in between two adjacent feed nips in the second direction and faces a support surface. Said star wheel in printing operation is arranged in rolling contact with the first surface of the print substrate upstream of the print area in the transport direction of the print substrate and is adapted for urging the print substrate towards the support surface.

A system for correcting skew of a web of material being fed through a machine includes first and second pinch assemblies placed at a distance transversely to a direction of feeding. First and second stepper motors drive the first and second pinch assemblies, respectively. A control provides first and second pulse trains to drive the first and second stepper motors, respectively. A device determines a value for the skew of the web of material. A method for controlling the system includes establishing first and second corrective pulse train sections for the first and second stepper motors, respectively, in accordance with a determined skew value, and providing first and second pulse trains for driving the first and second stepper motors, respectively.

A method and apparatus for registering a sheet for transfer of an image thereto. Disposed in the feed path of a sheet is a transport nip for feeding a sheet and for transversely registering the sheet and image by displacing the transport nip transversely of the feed direction. On each registration step the transport nip shifts in said transverse direction to a middle position. Transverse positioning means bring either the sheet before reaching the transport nip or the image on an image support into a transverse position such that a registration step by the transport nip to a middle position can take place and hence no reset movement of the transport nip is required between successive registration steps.

A sheet deposition device for the deposition of printed sheets on superimposed supports, where each support is provided with its own drive means for moving said support up and down between a deposition position, in which sheets can be deposited on that support, and a parking position, in which sheet deposition is not possible. Each support is also provided with detection means for detecting an obstacle in the space directly therebeneath, for example, sheets on a support directly therebeneath, said detection means delivering a first detection signal when the distance between the support provided with said detection means and an obstacle directly therebeneath is greater than a predetermined amount and said detection means delivering a second detection signal when said distance is equal to said predetermined amount. A control device in response to the reception of a first detection signal makes the drive means capable of activation for moving towards one another the supports between which are situated the detection means delivering the first detection signal and deactivates the drive means in response to the reception of a second detection signal.
