A fiber optic adapter () includes a body configured to mate a first fiber optic connector () with a second fiber optic connector (), the first and second fiber optic connectors () including latches () for mating with catches () of the adapter () for releasably engaging the first and second connectors () with the fiber optic adapter (), wherein the latches () are configured to be unlatched from the catches () by direct contact with the latches (). The adapter () includes a release mechanism () for allowing a user to release the latch () of at least one of the first and second fiber optic connectors () from the adapter () without directly contacting the latch () of the at least one of the first and second fiber optic connectors ().

Fiber optic connection system

A cable management structure () for an optical fiber distribution rack () is disclosed. In one aspect, the cable management structure () supports cables extending from an optical fiber distribution element () supported by the rack (). In one embodiment, a plurality of first cable support guides () are vertically aligned along a first plane () while a plurality of second cable support guides () are vertically aligned along a second plane (). As presented, the first cable support guides () are offset from the second cable support guides () such that the first plane () is horizontally recessed from the second plane (). In one embodiment a side channel frame () is provided to support the cable support guides (). In another embodiment, the optical fiber distribution element () is provided with linearly spaced mounting arrangements () configured for engagement with cable support guides ().

A device for installing an optical fiber in a connector, comprising an optical fiber cleaving mechanism (), a connector holding means and a fiber insertion mechanism () arranged such that an optical fiber may be cleaved by the cleaving mechanism to produce an end of the fiber, and the end of the fiber may be inserted by means of the insertion mechanism into a connector () held by the connector holding means ().

Device for installing an optical fibre in a splice connector

An optical fiber connector () for forming a mechanical splice between first and second bare optical fibers () stripped of coatings, the connector comprising a connector body that is divided into at least two parts () along at least part of a length thereof arranged such that the optical fibers may be clamped between the parts, and the connector body comprises at least two independently openable main clamping sections () dimensioned to clamp directly onto the bare fiber of the first and second optical fibers, and the connector body includes at least one additional clamping section () dimensioned to clamp onto a coated portion of one of the optical fibers, and the clamping sections are arranged such that the first optical fiber may be clamped by a first of the main clamping sections independently of the second optical fiber, enabling the clamping of the first fiber against rotational and axial movement with respect to the connector body to remain substantially undisturbed by subsequent clamping or unclamping of the second fiber.

Optical fibre splice connector

A device for cleaving an optical fibre includes a fixing mechanism to fix a fixing element to the optical fibre, and a cleaving mechanism to cleave the optical fibre. The fixing element may be a ferrule, and the fixing element may be fixed to the fibre such that the fibre extends through the fixing element. The cleaving mechanism cleaves the fibre preferably when the fixing element has been fixed to the fibre. The cleaving device may be a hand-held, and hand-operated, tool. The device may enable the possibility of automatic preset positioning and/or orienting of the cleaved fibre end face (which may be angled to the axis of the fibre) with respect to the fixing element. Attachments may be provided for holding the fibre and fixing element during the cleaving operation and for holding a connector body while the fixing element with the cleaved fibre is inserted into the connector.

Device for cleaving an optical fibre

Detent devices for optical fibre members have an outer casing member with a tapered aperture in which an inner engagement member is slidably fitted. A strength member of the optical fibre member received in the inner engagement member can be wrapped back around a boss of the inner engagement member and is clamped by the slidable engagement member when the optical fibre member is pulled. Thus axial strain relief is provided.

A method of environmentally protecting an elongate substrate with a cover and a sealing means comprising a sealing material having an elongation of at least 100% and a compression set at 70.degree. C. of less than 30%, which comprises positioning the sealing means around a portion of the substrate and surrounding the substrate with the cover such that the sealing material provides a seal between the cover and the substrate.
