The disclosure relates to, among other things, abrasive particles comprising a microparticulate layer disposed on at least a portion of the outer surface of the abrasive particles, wherein the microparticulate layer comprises microparticles dispersed in a binder and the abrasive particles are shaped abrasive particles; abrasive articles comprising such abrasive particles, including coated abrasive articles, non-woven abrasive articles, and bonded abrasive articles; and methods of making those articles.

A composite abrasive wheel comprises primary and secondary abrasive portions. The primary abrasive portion comprises shaped ceramic abrasive particles retained in a first organic binder. The secondary abrasive portion is bonded to the primary abrasive portion, and comprises secondary crushed abrasive particles retained in a second organic binder. The primary abrasive portion comprises a larger volume percentage of the shaped ceramic abrasive particles than the secondary abrasive portion. A central aperture extends through the composite abrasive wheel.

Described are abrasive articles comprising a nonwoven; a binder layer contacting the nonwoven and at least partially filling spaces between fibers of the nonwoven; first abrasive particles adhered to the binder layer; a slurry layer comprising a second binder and second abrasive particles, the slurry layer contacting the nonwoven and the first layer and at least partially filling spaces within the fibers of the nonwoven; and, methods of preparation of such articles.

Nonwoven abrasive articles and methods

Abrasive articles and a method for the manufacture of the articles are described. The articles comprise a backing having a first major surface and a second major surface; a first resin layer comprising a first hardened resin, the first resin layer extending over the first major surface of the backing; abrasive particles adhered within the first resin layer; a second resin layer applied over the first resin layer, the second resin layer comprising a second hardened resin; and a lofty, three dimensional, nonwoven web of fibers bonded to one another at their mutual contact points and extending through the first and second resin layers. The dry coating weights of the first and second hardened resins are about 400 g/m.sup.2 or greater and preferably greater than about 600 g/m.sup.2.

Abrasive articles and method for the manufacture of same

Bonded abrasive compositions, articles incorporating same, and methods of making the compositions and articles are presented, the compositions comprising abrasive particles dispersed throughout and adhered within an elastomeric polyurea matrix. The polyurea matrix is formed from the polymerization reaction product of a polyfunctional amine and an isocyanate. The compositions exhibit excellent smear- and wear-resistance, and may be attached to a variety of backings. One preferred backing is integrally molded to the bonded abrasive composition.
