Prior to associating with a wireless network, a wireless device receives from a network access point, a message containing information identifying (i) identity of the network and (ii) network policies; retrieves the information from the message; based on the network identity, determines whether a network attributes record for the network already exists in the device. If not, the device creates a temporary network attributes record for the network. Based on the network policies, the device attempts to associate to and authenticate the network. After successfully associating to and authenticating the network, the device determines whether the network attributes record for the network has expired. If not, the device renews the network attributes record and implements the network policies stored in the network attributes record If the network attributes record has expired, then the device deletes the network attributes record and implements default network policies for the wireless network.

According to one configuration, a wireless access service provider selects and assigns a particular authentication option amongst multiple different authentication options to an entity such as a wireless access point or a sub-network supported by the wireless access point. When a communication device attempts to use the corresponding wireless access point provided by the wireless access service provider, a wireless access gateway receives information from the wireless access point indicating the particular authentication option assigned to authenticate the communication device. The wireless access gateway communicates the notification of the particular authentication option to an authentication manager, which provides the wireless access gateway with network address information indicating a captive portal in which to authenticate the communication device. The wireless access gateway then uses the network address information to redirect the communication device to the captive portal, which is then used to authenticate the communication device. to access the Internet.

According to one configuration, a system comprising: a first SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) device; a second SIM device; and user equipment in which the first SIM device and the second SIM device are installed. A user device includes and maintains a geolocation list (GLL) including sets of information corresponding to Citizens Broadband radio Services Devices (CBSDs). The GLL stored in the user device contains entries corresponding to the areas most recently visited by the UE, each entry including location information of a CBSD. User devices typically frequent a limited set of the same areas repetitively. Thus this maintained relatively small list provides the UE with a highly relevant set of information which can be quickly accessed without additional wireless signaling and the additional power loss associated with a typical search. When the UE desires to find and connect to a CBSD, the UE first searches its GLL for a CBSD providing coverage in its currently located area. However, if GLL search does not identify a CBSD, then the UE sends a request to a geolocation server for active CBSDs.
