In one example, an apparatus includes a carriage to carry a payload through a manufacturing space at the urging of control elements in a control space and a belt movable with the carriage to block contaminants in the manufacturing space from passing to the control space along a carriage travel path.

In one example, an elevator for a roll of print media includes rotatable shafts oriented parallel to one another and translatable supports to support a roll of print media. Each support is operatively connected to the shafts such that rotating the shafts in a first direction raises the supports and rotating the shafts in a second direction opposite the first direction lowers the supports.

Provided is a system that includes a reference strip and a print head carriage. The reference strip includes transmission windows for transmitting signals. The transmission windows include bridges.

In one embodiment, a device for use with a first carriage carrying a printhead and a sensor includes a track. The track is positioned adjacent to a path, the path being followed by the first carriage. A second carriage is movable along the track and carries a target. The second carriage is movable between a first position, in which the target is away from the sensor, and a second position, in which the target is adjacent to the sensor and a reference included in the target is a known distance away from the sensor.

A hybrid printer adapted to print onto roll-based print media and rigid print media is presented. The printer comprises a print head that is movable along at least one substantially horizontal scan axis; and drive means adapted to drive lifting means. The lifting means are arranged to cause the scan axis to undergo movement in a substantially vertical direction when driven by the drive means, thereby enabling a distance between the print head and the print media to be adjusted.

Hybrid printing device

A printer or other hardcopy apparatus comprises a pinch system () comprising a pinch wheel () and a drive roller () in which the pinch wheel is arranged to contact a print media at locations which move continuously transversely of the direction of media advance. The surface of the pinch wheel may have raised portions () extending around the circumference of the roller element and forming continuous bands inclined to the direction of media advance. In a modification, the bands form a helix () at each end of the pinch wheel. In a further modification a pinch member () comprises two parallel rows of freely-rotatable ball bearings () in a holder (), in which they may be capable of a certain amount of lateral movement.

A hard copy device having a carriage arranged to support a printhead and to reciprocate across a scan axis, the device being arranged to determine the position of at least a part of the printhead along the scan axis, compensating for carriage rotation about the an axis orthogonal to the scan axis, by interpolating or extrapolating from carriage position information derived from first and second codestrips traversing the scan axis and spaced apart in a direction orthogonal to the scan axis.

A spittoon for servicing an inkjet printhead is provided, where the spittoon includes a bottom and one or more walls. At least one wall of the spittoon has an inwardly extending lip. The walls of the spittoon, taken in combination with the bottom of the spittoon, define a waste ink reservoir. The presence of at least one lip on the spittoon walls helps retain the waste ink when the spittoon is moved or tilted, minimizing ink spills.

A method of flattening print media in an ink jet apparatus, said apparatus comprising a media feed path, a media drive roller and one or more pinch rollers, said one or more pinch rollers being arranged to rotatably cooperate with said drive roller so as to grip said media therebetween, said drive roller having a rotational axis extending substantially transverse to said feed path and being arranged to rotate in first and second directions to respectively feed said media in first and second feed directions; said method comprising the steps of: feeding said media a first distance in said first feed direction; and then, feeding said media a second distance in said second feed direction, thereby causing said media to flatten in a direction substantially transverse to said feed path.

A pen carriage for use in an inkjet printer of the type which includes a moveable scanning carriage, the carriage having at least one stall for reception of an inkjet pen having an upwardly directed fluid inlet which can be slidably connected to establish fluid communication of an inkjet pen on the carriage with an offboard fluid supply remote from the pen and a fluid delivery tube for connecting the supply to the pen. The carriage includes a base and a pen cover pivotally attached to the base, the tube having a length extending between pivotal connections of the cover to said base generally parallel to and radially spaced from the axis of pivotal connection of the cover to the base to permit and confine all twisting of the tube to the length between the connections. The cover also includes a fluid delivery passageway having a downwardly directed fluid delivery outlet opening toward and connected in fluid delivery relationship with the upwardly directed pen inlet when the cover is latched in closed position.

A rollfeed braking system for maintaining substantially constant tension in rollfeed media includes a rotary brake drum on a rollfeed mounting spindle assembly and a pivotally mounted spring biased brake arm having a braking area urged toward the brake drum. A friction ring is mounted on the exterior surface of the brake drum so that frictional braking force is applied to the drum by the friction ring rather than by brake shoes as is conventional. Substantially constant tensioning of the media results since roll replacement does not require the operator to contact the exterior surface of the brake drum which leaves contamination thereon in the form of fingerprint oil, grease or other contaminants.

A plurality of spaced-apart deflector guides are positioned over the input platen of a printer. They are suspended from an elongated media shield which extends laterally across an input media path such that a leading edge of media can easily fit under both the media shield and deflector guides. Each deflector guide has a plurality of downward facing surfaces such as ribs for directing the media toward an input slot defined by a top surface of the input platen, a terminal edge of the deflector guides, and a terminal edge of the media shield. The spaces between the deflector guides are wide enough to allow both hands to be placed directly on the media adjacent to or between two deflector guides for easy manual manipulation of a leading edge of the media into general alignment with the input slot where it can be gripped between the main pick roller and opposing pinch wheels for feeding into a print zone on the printer. The invention is applicable to both sheet feed and rollfeed printer devices.
