An electromagnetic actuator for producing axial forces between a stator element and a rotor element. The stator and rotor elements comprise structural bases with a laminated magnetic flux carrying assemblies secured therein. The laminated assemblies comprise a plurality of ferromagnetic sheets, each sheet extending substantially radially from and parallel to the axis of rotation. The rotor and stator elements are axially spaced with respective laminated assemblies in facing relationship.

Magnetic axial force actuator construction

A stator housing surrounds the portion of a rotor having a magnetic flux carrying member extending around the rotor within the stator housing. A plurality of electromagnets are supported by the stator around the periphery of the rotor oppositely of the magnetic flux carrying member. Each of the electromagnets includes a stacked arrangement of laminations having an E-shaped cross-sectional configuration. Each lamination includes a pole tip in close proximity to the surface of the magnetic flux carrying member to form an air gap. Magnetizing coils extend around the legs of the E-shaped laminations. When electrical current is supplied to the coils, magnetic forces are exerted upon the magnetic flux carrying member enabling the rotor to be positioned in a levitated state within the stator housing.

Radial magnetic bearing

An electromagnetic axial thrust bearing comprises a rotating member, at least one stationary member and a winding for generating a m.m.f. associated with the stationary member. The stationary member is comprised of a solid ferromagnetic material having at least one arc-shaped groove substantially concentric with the turning axis of the rotating member. The groove is lined with laminates of a ferromagnetic material. The winding is laid into the lined groove of the stationary member. The rotating member has a groove facing the groove in the stationary member. Laminates of ferromagnetic material are stacked thereon.

Magnetic thrust bearing with high force modulation capability

A flight motion simulator includes a unit under test supported on a stationary frame for angular and translational movement along pitch, roll, and yaw axes. A rotor element is secured to the unit under test and has a spherical configuration. Magnetic bearings supported by the stationary frame support the rotor element in three degrees of freedom of movement. A drag-cup induction motor is mounted on the frame and connected to the unit under test to generate three degrees of freedom of movement by generating a rotating magnetic flux in a stator assembly to induce a corresponding flow of currents in the rotor element to produce torque and motion in the unit under test in the same direction as the flux movement in the stator assembly.
