A cement retarder composition, method, kit and system are herein disclosed. Seeds are added to cement to delay the setting of cement. Cement retarders are added to cement to delay the setting of the cement until it is pumped to the desired position.

Use of seeds as a cement set retarder

A cement includes a cement mixture and a permeable, micro-cluster silica material present in an amount from about 10 percent to about 30 percent by weight of the cement mixture. The cement blend may be used in casing a borehole when appropriate fluid loss agents are included in the cement blend. Additionally, a cement additive is added to a cement mixture to provide the cement blend. This cement additive can be formulated in a kit form.

Cement blend

A method of monitoring and evaluating the dry-blending of powders and granular materials via the use of non-dissolvable particulate matter such as mustard seed as a blending aid. The mustard seed is blended into the total batch of dry blend materials and the mustard seed can subsequently be extracted by a process of sieving from a known volume of sample taken of the mixture since the mustard seed is larger than the other particles that are being blended. The weight and or sight count of the extracted mustard seed present in the sample is determined and compared with the amount of seed that should be present in a perfect blend to determine if the dry blend materials are thoroughly mixed.

Dry blending aid

A two step process for treating an oil or gas well. The first step uses a cross linking agent, such as borax, as a preliminary wash for the well following drilling. The cross linking agent cleans the well of excess mud and pre-coats the tubing and the formation surfaces with the cross linking agent. The second step introduces a cement-polymer mixture into the well. A polymer, such as for example polyvinyl alcohol, that undergoes cross linking when exposed to the cross linking agent is employed. When the polymer comes into contact with the cross linking agent in the well, cross linking of the polymer occurs. This cross linking helps to prevent fluid loss into the formation. Also, because the cross linking agent wash previously cleaned the surfaces of the tubing and the formation, better bonding between the cement and the surfaces of the tubing and the formation occurs.
