A wear-resistant annular seal assembly has a plurality of interlocking one-piece seal segments interleaved with a plurality of two-piece seal segments. The seal segments are made using wear-resistant rigid material such as steel, stainless steel or a composite material. In one embodiment the seal segments are coated with a fluoropolymer. A straddle packer includes a first and second spaced apart ones of the wear-resistant seal assemblies and a linear force generator for urging the first and second seal assemblies to a seal-set condition.

A leak-resistant pipe connection has an annular seal bulge on a pin end of the connection and a tapered seal area adjacent a secondary box shoulder of a box end of the connection. The annular seal bulge is coined on contact with the tapered seal area on initial make-up of the connection which provides a metal-to-metal seal that is very resistant to high-pressure fluid leakage even after the connection is subjected to extreme shear and tensile stresses.

A mechanical perforation locator has a plurality of perforation locator pins that are normally urged to a run-in condition. Fluid pumped into a work string energizes the perforation locator and urges the perforation locator pins outwardly. When the mechanical perforation locator is pulled or pushed through a cased well bore using the work string, some of the pins are forced into perforations in the casing, which impedes movement of the perforation locator and produces a characteristic spike in work string weight that is detectable at the surface.

A mechanical perforator with guide skates includes a perforator module and a skate module. The perforator module has perforator blades that may be forced outwardly to perforate machined-away areas of a well casing after the skate module has guided the perforator blades into alignment with the respective machined-away areas and locked the perforator blades in that alignment.

A mechanically perforated well casing collar has at least one machined-away area on a sidewall surface to facilitate mechanical perforation of the casing collar, and an internal guide and lock structure to guide at least one blade of a mechanical perforator into alignment with the at least one machined-away area and permit the mechanical perforator to lock in that alignment.

Pressure perforated well casing collars have at least one pressure perforation groove cut to a consistent depth in an a sidewall of the well casing collar with sidewall bottom material at a bottom of the groove. The sidewall bottom material ruptures at a predetermined fluid pressure greater than a burst pressure rating of plain casing joints connected to the well casing collars to assemble a well casing string.

Long lateral wellbores are prepared for the production of hydrocarbons by preparing only a portion of the wellbore for production at a time, starting at a remote end of the long lateral wellbore. The prepared production section is produced until production becomes uneconomic before a further production section is prepared and produced.

Enhanced oil recovery is practiced in long lateral wellbores by drilling at least one of a sidetrack lateral wellbore end a branch lateral wellbore from the main lateral wellbore. After production of the sidetrack lateral wellbore or the branch lateral wellbore, EOR flood fluid is pumped info the at least one of the sidetrack lateral wellbore and the branch lateral wellbore and recovered hydrocarbons and EOR flood fluid are produced from the main lateral wellbore, or vice versa.

A work string for completing long lateral well bores is assembled using small diameter drill pipe having a nigh make-up torque for a curved section and lateral bore of a well. A larger diameter drill pipe is used in the vertical section of the well to facilitate pushing the small diameter drill pipe through the long lateral bore.
