Generally rough sphere-shaped work pieces made of fragile material are ground into more uniform spheres. The rough spheres are fed into a holding plate having a channel cut into the bottom side of the plate with a width slightly larger than the largest diameter of the rough spheres. A movable abrasive surface is positioned adjacent to the bottom side of the holding plate. As the rough spheres move through the holding plate which can be vibrated, they move in contact with each other and with the abrasive surface. The finally formed spheres leave the plate where they are collected. It is a further embodiment green spheres which are treated in a sintering process with hydrogen gas have tungsten oxide particles applied to the surface of the spheres prior to and during sintering so that the particles remain separated and apart.

Shot pellet or small arms projectile comprises 40-60% by weight of tungsten and 60-40% by weight of iron formed by sintering tungsten containing powders having median particle sizes below 6 microns to form a material consisting primary of an intermetallic compound of tungsten and iron or of a metal matrix of iron surrounding tungsten containing particles.

Ferroniobium, ferrotantalum and ferrovanadium alloys are hydrogenated to facilitate crushing then nitrided, and then acid-leached to produce a soluble iron nitride leachate and a niobium, tantalum or vanadium nitride residue which residue can be denitrided to yield the metal which can be recovered by melting.

Recovery of niobium metal

A method is disclosed for preparing and recovering metal nitrides from their ferrometal alloys and nickel metal alloys. Exemplary steps of the process involve niobium nitride prepared from ferroniobium alloys (FeNb) which are first hydrided to provide a friable, comminutable product which is then nitrided under conditions which form distinct phases of iron nitride and niobium nitride respectively.

Method for the preparation of niobium nitride

Lead free shotshell pellets are disclosed which consist essentially of an alloy of iron and 30 to 46% by weight of tungsten. The shotshells may include a plurality of pellet sizes, and the pellets may be coated substantially uniformly with a polymeric coating, resin, or lubricant.
