A drive base which is utilized in conjunction with a postal mailing system is disclosed. The base comprises a mode selection arrangement which alternately actuates a postage metering unit or a tape drive unit located within a mailing machine. The arrangement also provides a neutral setting for the drive base. Thus, in the neutral position, the drive base prevents the meter unit or the tape drive unit from operating. The mode selection arrangement includes a first cam member for engaging either the metering unit or the tape drive unit for operation. The arrangement also includes a second cam member for preventing one of the units from rotating when the other is engaged. In addition, the second cam member prevents both units from moving when the system is in a neutral position. This base provides a simple apparatus to be utilized for actuating the various portions of a postal mailing system.

In an electronic postage meter, the setting motors for setting the print wheels in the printing drum are directly controllable externally of the secure portion of the meter. The meter includes a shutter bar arranged to block rotation of the printing drum under determined conditions, the printing drum being rotatable in response to drive from a postage meter base. The postage meter includes first and second interposers controlled by a microprocessor for redundantly inhibiting movement of the shutter bar from a position blocking printing of postage. One of the microprocessor controlled interposers is also mechanically coupled to the print wheel setting mechanism to inhibit release of the interposer at determined positions of the stepping mechanism, and to inhibit operation of the setting mechanism when the interposer is released.

Printer control systems for electronic postage meter

A secured housing for an electronic device having an electronic memory mounted therewithin is provided which has an access aperture which provides tamper proof security and electro-magnetic interference protection while permitting access to the memory for reading the information maintained in the memory. Opening of the access aperture disables the electronic device from further operation by unlatching a switch which disconnects the electronic device from its power supply while preventing relatching of the switch to reactivate the electronic device. Use of the access aperture provides a visible indication of access to the interior of the housing. In one embodiment of the invention, the electronic device is an electronic postage meter and the electronic memory is a nonvolatile memory containing postage accounting information.

Security system for electronic device

A rotary collator having a rotatable drum with a plurality of radially extending partitions or bins in which sheets to be collated are held by a sheet clamp mounted in each bin. The sheet clamp for each bin has a solenoid-based activating device which releases the sheet clamp during the sheet ejecting portion of the collating cycle. The sheet clamp is released a short time before the rotatable drum brings the associated bin into a sheet ejecting position. A toggle structure and a relatively high compression spring are used to hold the sheets in the bin when in clamping position. The sheet clamp of any empty bin is programmed not to release, thereby greatly reducing noise and extending the life of the mechanism.

An automatic date setting apparatus for a postage meter is disclosed which may be attached to the housing of a postage meter. The apparatus includes solenoids that drive linkage segments which are engageable with the gear train of the meter date indicator. Each solenoid is in electrical connection with a timing device to be enabled periodically thereby.

A document inverter is disclosed which may be utilized in conjunction with a belt conveyor wherein the document is conveyed along a continuous path before and after being inverted. Means is provided for selectively determining whether the document should be inverted or allowed to continue along the path uninterrupted.
