A fluid jet nozzle for a decoking tool, a decoking tool and method of operating same. The nozzle includes a nozzle assembly for use in a fluid jet decoking tool. The assembly includes a housing to hold one or more nozzles that are used to spray or otherwise distribute decoking fluid. An internal flowpath that extends from an inlet of the nozzle to an outlet of the nozzle defines a tapered shape such that when the decoking fluid passes through the nozzle, the flowpath produces a predominantly coherent flow pattern in the fluid.

A rotary joint for a decoking tool. The rotary joint includes a seal assembly that has one or more primary seals and one or more secondary seals. The secondary seals become operative upon the presence of a leak in the primary seals such that the rotary joint can continue to be used until a scheduled maintenance outage. A selective vent is used to route leaking fluid so that one or the other of the primary and secondary seals can be activated.

A mode shifting apparatus for a decoking tool, a decoking tool and method of operating same. The apparatus includes features to make it rotatably and translationally responsive to changes in pressure of a decoking fluid such that the apparatus is cooperative with the tool and the decoking fluid in a first operating condition to establish a drilling mode with one or more of the tool's drilling nozzles, and in a second operating condition to establish a cutting mode with one or more of the tool's cutting nozzles. In one form, the apparatus includes one or more sets of tandem seals disposed along a component interface within the apparatus or between the apparatus and the tool to help redundantly isolate seizure-sensitive components within the apparatus from the pressurized decoking fluid. In another form, the apparatus includes a gas spring to counteract the forces imposed by the pressurized decoking fluid. In another form, the apparatus includes a manual override connection.

Remotely-operated mode shifting apparatus for a combination fluid jet decoking tool, and a tool incorporating same

A remotely operated cutting mode shifting apparatus for use with a decoking tool of the type in which the cutting mode is changed by rotation of a diverter valve plate, has a shifter body adapted for mounting to the decoking tool and a control rod for engaging with the diverter valve plate. It includes a mechanism within the shifter body for rotating the control rod to drive the diverter valve plate to shift the cutting mode of the decoking tool upon release of cutting fluid pressure from the tool.

Remotely operated cutting mode shifting apparatus for a combination fluid jet decoking tool

A centrifugal pump for transporting fluid with a housing, an impeller and a plurality of pressure sensors. Disposed within the housing is a volute section defined by a circumferential path through which a fluid may travel, a discharge section tangentially, aligned and in fluid communication with the volute section such that a flowpath is defined by fluid flowing from the volute section and through the discharge section; and a volute lip section defining a bifurcation point between the circumferential path and the discharge section. The plurality of pressure sensors are disposed within the volute section of the housing, and are spaced apart from one another such that pressure difference reading taken between each exhibit a substantially linear relationship with fluid flow rates to ensure accurate flow rate measurement.
