The disclosure relates to a method for the beneficiation of an ore in a froth flotation process. The method comprises contacting an ore in a liquid medium to a collector composition comprising a plant-derived liquid decarboxylated rosin acid (DCR) collector. The DCR comprises 40 to 100 wt. % of tricyclic compounds having 18-20 carbon atoms, one or more C═C groups, and m/z (mass/charge) value of 220-280. The DCR has an oxygen content of <5%, a density of 0.9 to 1.0 g/cmat 20° C., and an acid value of <50 mg KOH/g.

Collector composition and methods of using thereof

The disclosure relates to viscosity improver concentrates comprising a bio-based liquid decarboxylated rosin acid as a solubilizer, and a viscosity index improver. The viscosity improver concentrate is used in lubricating oil compositions comprising base oil and optional additives. The decarboxylated rosin acid component has at least one or more of: one or more C═C groups, and 40-100 wt. % of tricyclic compounds having 18-20 carbon atoms; a sum of tricyclic compounds as aromatic and cycloaliphatic of 50-100 wt. %, based on total weight of the decarboxylated rosin acid; and an amount of cycloaliphatic compounds of 15-100 wt. %, based on total weight of the decarboxylated rosin acid. The viscosity improver concentrates comprising the solubilizer have comparable properties, including compatibility, kinematic viscosity, and viscosity index, to other commonly used fossil based solubilizers.

Lubricating oils with viscosity index improver concentrates

The disclosure relates to fuel compositions comprising a base fuel, a lubricity modifier, and optional additives, and methods for using same. The base fuel is a middle distillate having a sulfur content of <500 ppm. The lubricity modifier comprises a plant-derived liquid decarboxylated rosin acid and optionally at least one of a fatty acid, a fatty acid derivative, and mixtures thereof. The decarboxylated rosin acid has a flash point of 95-180° C., a density of 0.9 to 1.0 g/cm3 at 20° C., a viscosity of 15 to 60 cSt at 40° C., and an acid value of <50 mg KOH/g. The fuel compositions have desired tribological properties, such as wear scar diameter, coefficient of friction, and percent film, as well as cloud point performance.

Fuel composition with lubricity modifier

The disclosure relates to a lubricating composition consisting essentially of a decarboxylated rosin acid (DCR), a base oil, and optional additives, and methods for using same. The decarboxylated rosin acid has a density of 0.9 to 1.0 g/cm3 at 20° C., a viscosity of 15 to 60 cSt at 40° C., and an acid value of <50 mg KOH/g. The lubricating compositions containing the DCR is characterized as having improved anti-wear and friction reducing properties, as well as improved electrical properties, and cooling performance for use in electric and hybrid vehicles. In embodiments, the lubricating composition exhibits a wear scar diameter of <350 μm, according to ASTM D6079.

Lubricating compositions with decarboxylated rosin acid

The disclosure relates to a biobased metal-working fluid (MWF) composition and method for making same, and more particularly metal-working fluid with biobased lubricants with improved emulsion stability. At least 50 wt. % of the base oil component in the MWF concentrate is a plant-derived liquid decarboxylated rosin acid oil ('DCR'). The DCR comprises 50 to 100 wt. % of tricyclic compounds having 18-20 carbon atoms, one or more C&#x2550;C groups, and m/z (mass/charge) value of 220-280; an oxygen content of &#x3c;5%; a density of 0.9 to 1.0 g/cmat 20&#xb0; C.; and an acid value of &#x3c;10 mg KOH/g. The resulting MWF is characterized as having comparable if not better performance compared to a MWF containing only mineral oil (e.g., Group I or Group II).

Metal-working fluid compositions and methods for making

A collector composition comprising (a) refined tall oil wherein the refined tall oil is any tall oil that has been subjected to one or more refining or processing steps that results in an increase in acid value; and (b) a fatty acid wherein the refined tall oil has an acid value of at least 90 mg KOH/g and a weight average molecular weight of at least 750 g/mol. A mineral slurry comprising (a) an ore comprising a mineral of interest; (b) a collector composition comprising (i) a refined tall oil; and (ii) a fatty acid; and (c) a liquid. A method for the beneficiation of an ore, the method comprising (a) preparing a slurry comprising the ore dispersed in a liquid; (b) contacting the slurry with a collector composition comprising a refined tall oil; and (c) recovering a beneficiated ore.

Collector compositions and methods of using thereof

Rosin esters are provided. The rosin esters can exhibit improved color (e.g., the rosin ester can have a neat Gardner color of 4 or less), improved oxidative stability (e.g., when 1000 ppm or less of an antioxidant is present in combination with the rosin ester, the rosin ester can exhibit an oxidative-induction time at 130&#xb0; C. of at least 30 minutes), improved color stability (e.g., the rosin ester can retain a neat Gardner color of 5 or less when heated to a temperature of 160&#xb0; C. for a period of three hours), or combinations thereof. Also provided polymeric compositions comprising the rosin esters, as well as methods of making the rosin esters.

Rosin esters and compositions thereof

Rosin esters are provided. The rosin esters can exhibit improved color (e.g., the rosin ester can have a neat Gardner color of 8.5 or less), improved oxidative stability (e.g., when 1000 ppm or less of an antioxidant is present in combination with the rosin ester, the rosin ester can exhibit an oxidative-induction time at 130&#xb0; C. of at least 75 minutes), improved color stability (e.g., the rosin ester can exhibit less than a 10% change in neat Gardner color when heated to a temperature of 160&#xb0; C. for a period of three hours), or combinations thereof. A method of producing a low sulfur tall oil fatty acid by first esterifying the tall oil fatty acid, followed by distillation of the tall oil fatty acid ester, followed by saponification and acidulation to provide a low sulfur tall oil fatty acid. A fuel additive comprising tall oil fatty acid and a sulfur compound, wherein the sulfur compound comprises from about 0.1 to about 20 ppm of the additive. A composition comprising a blend of first and second esters: the first ester comprising a reaction product of first reactants comprising trimer acid, first polyhydric alcohol and first monohydric alcohol; the first monohydric alcohol selected from the group of C8-18 monohydric alcohols; the second ester comprising a reaction product of second reactants comprising trimer acid, second polyhydric alcohol and second monohydric alcohol; the second monohydric alcohol selected from the group of C6-10 monohydric alcohols; the first and second monohydric alcohols being non-identical. Under these reaction conditions, a high proportion of the starting ester of a hydroxyacid is converted into a secondary alcohol ester of the hydroxyacid, while minimizing the formation of by-products including estolide.
