A method to facilitate the reduction of solar radiation impacting Earth proposes the use of a plurality of porous particles that are introduced into Earth's stratosphere at an average distance of at least 10 kilometers above sea level. Each porous particle has a continuous polymeric phase composed of an organic polymer, and discrete pores dispersed within the continuous polymeric phase. Each porous particle has a mode particle size of 2-20 μm; a coefficient of variance (CV) of no more than 20% compared to the mode particle size; and a porosity of 20%-75%. The discrete pores have an average pore size 'd' (nm) that is defined by 0.3≤d/λ≤0.8 wherein λ is 400-3,000 nm. Each of the discrete pores of the porous particles is filled with air and optionally a pore stabilizing hydrocolloid that is disposed at the interface of the discrete pore and the continuous polymeric phase.

Method of geoengineering to reduce solar radiation

A foamed, opacifying element useful as a light-blocking article is prepared with a dry opacifying layer on a substrate. The dry opacifying layer is densified, followed by application of a functional composition formulation to form a functional composition upon drying and curing at a coverage of 0.5-15 g/m. The functional composition comprises at least: (i) glass particles such as hollow glass particles at a coverage of 0.1-2.2 g/cm, and can also include any or combination of a (iv) water-soluble or water-dispersible organic polymeric binder that may be crosslinked, thickeners, coating aids having an HLB of at least 5, (ii) lubricants, (iii) tinting materials, and (v) crosslinking agents. Among other properties, the presence of the glass particles provides additional heat absorption for the foamed, opacifying elements that can be formed into light-blocking materials.

Foamed, opacifying elements are prepared using a foamable aqueous composition containing porous particles and an opacifying colorant. This composition is aerated, disposed onto a substrate, and dried. The dry foamed composition is densified, and cured in either order. Disclosed herein are hydrophobically-modified poly(aminoamides) useful as fixative detackifiers for stickies and pitch control in papermaking processes. These polymers are prepared via modification of amine-containing water-soluble poly(aminoamides) with reactive functional group-containing hydrophobic compounds. In particular, poly(aminoamides) may be modified, under appropriate reaction conditions, with long chain alkyl glycidyl ether, AKD (alkyl ketene dimer), ASA (alkyl succinyl anhydride), or Quab (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl-N,N,N-dimethylalkyl ammonium chloride). These novel polymers are effective in inhibiting deposition of organic contaminants in pulp and papermaking systems.

Hydrophobically modified poly(aminoamides)

A method and an apparatus for measuring the depositability of particulate contaminants present in a pulp or paper mill fluid stream and evaluating interactions of such particulate contaminants with other contaminants collects the particulate contaminants on a suitable substrate, such as a plastic film coated with an adhesive or coated with organic contaminate, placed in contact with the pulp or paper mill fluid stream for at least five minutes up to several hours. The amount of contaminants collected on the substrate is quantified and evaluated by taking one or more scanned images of the substrate with a resolution of at least 2,000 dots per inch (DPI) and analyzing the scanned images with image analysis technique.

Method and apparatus for measuring deposition of particulate contaminants in pulp and paper slurries

The present invention is method of manufacturing a wax dispersion. The method includes forming a solution of a solvent and a dispersant, the dispersant being a polymer of partially or fully hydrogenated styrene butadiene wherein the styrene to butadiene ratio is from 20 to 90. Wax is added to the solution to form a slurry. The particle size of the wax is reduced through communition of the slurry. The wax dispersion can be sued for the manufacture of toner particles.

The present invention is a method for the preparation of electrostatographic toner including the following steps. A polymer material is dissolved in an organic solvent to form an organic phase. The organic phase is dispersed in an aqueous phase that includes a particulate stabilizer and a salt including an anion selected from chloride, oxychloride, sulfate, perchlorate, nitrate, dihydrogen phosphate, lactate, trifluoromethylsulfonate, and trifluromethylhydrate and a cation selected from aluminum, iron (III), tin (II) and zirconium (IV), to form a dispersion. The dispersion is homogenized. The organic solvent is evaporated from the dispersion and the resultant product is recovered, washed and dried. In an alternate method the salt is added directly to the dispersion.

The present invention provides a method for the preparation of a UV curable electrostatographic toner. The process includes the steps of dispersing a polymeric material and a UV curable material and a UV photoinitiator in an organic solvent to form an organic phase. The organic phase is dispersed in an aqueous phase containing a particulate stabilizer to form a dispersion. The dispersion is homogenized and the organic solvent is removed from the dispersed particles in the dispersion which are then recovered.

The present invention is a method of manufacturing polymer particles. The method includes providing an oil in water emulsion, wherein the oil phase comprises a volatile solvent and at least one water insoluble polymer. The volatile solvent has a solubility of not more than 10% in water and the water insoluble polymer has a weight average molecular weight of at least 2000. The water insoluble polymer is soluble in the volatile solvent. The emulsion is supplied to a rotating surface of a rotating surface reactor. The temperature of the rotating surface is maintained at the boiling point of said solvent or greater. The rotating surface of the reactor spins at a speed sufficient to cause the emulsion to spread over the rotating surface as a continuously flowing thin film wherein a vapor phase containing the volatile solvent is removed.
