A rotary steerable drilling system can be positioned in a subterranean formation to steer a drill to form a wellbore in the subterranean formation. An orientation of a steering valve, which is positioned in the rotary steerable drilling system, can be adjusted to cover each channel of one or more channels of a valve seat adjacent the steering valve to deactivate each steering pad of one or more steering pads of the rotary steerable drilling system. The orientation of the steering valve can be adjusted to activate at least one steering pad of the one or more steering pads of the rotary steerable drilling system.

A rotary steerable system is disclosed. The rotary steerable system includes a tool collar having cavities and through holes extending there through to interconnect the cavities. The rotary steerable system also includes pad pushers each positionable within the plurality of cavities to be coupled to the tool collar, each pad pusher coupled to a respective pad retention housing on the uphole end and the downhole end of the tool collar. A secondary retention mechanism is slidably attached to the tool collar and coupled with a respective pad retention housing.

A rotary steerable system (RSS), the RSS including steering collar pockets, actuation cylinders positioned in the steering collar pockets, barrel-shaped pistons positioned in the actuation cylinders and pad actuators attached to the pistons. Each barrel-shaped piston includes a piston hanger; each pad actuator includes a pad housing mounted on the steering collar and a steering pad. Each steering pad is pivotably coupled to one of the pad housings via a first hinge pin and is directly connected via a second hinge pin to the piston hanger of at least one of the pistons. Each barrel-shaped piston is movable within its respective actuation cylinder such that, when extended out of the actuation cylinder, its respective steering pad pivots laterally from the steering collar on the first hinge pin to contact a side of a wellbore, urging the steering collar in a direction opposite the lateral direction.

A body of a shear pin can be positioned in a pad stopper of a steering pad of a rotary steerable system. The rotary steerable system can be used to steer a drill in a wellbore. The steering pad can be positioned on the rotary steerable system such that a head of the shear pin is coupled with a lateral pad of the rotary steerable system. The head of the shear pin can deactivate the steering pad by preventing the steering pad from actuating. A fluid pulse can be output in the wellbore to break the shear pin for enabling the steering pad to actuate to cause the rotary steerable system to steer the drill in the wellbore.

A centralizer for a downhole probe disposed within a pipe, the centralizer having an elongated, primary tubular member with two or more elongated centralizer strip assemblies extending along the primary tubular member. Each strip assembly has inner and outer hollow portions on the wall of the primary tubular member and spaced apart from one another about the circumference of the wall. The outer portion of each strip assembly comprises a flexible outer spring, and the inner portion of the strip assembly comprises a flexible inner spring. The inner portions of the strip assemblies engage the outer diameter of a probe and the outer portions of the strip assemblies engage the inner diameter of a pipe.

A centralizer for a downhole probe disposed within a pipe, the centralizer having an elongated, primary tubular member with two or more elongated centralizer strip assemblies extending along the primary tubular member. Each strip assembly has inner and outer portions opposing one another on the wall of the primary tubular member and spaced apart from one another about the circumference of the wall. Each inner portion has an inner radial length that is the same for each strip assembly, and each outer portion has an outer radial length that is the same for each strip assembly. The inner portions of the strip assemblies engage the outer diameter of a probe and the outer portions of the strip assemblies engage the inner diameter of a pipe.

A centralizer for a downhole probe disposed within an eccentric pipe, the centralizer having an elongated, primary tubular member with three or more elongated centralizer strip assemblies extending along the primary tubular member. Each strip assembly has inner and outer portions opposing one another on the wall of the primary tubular member and spaced apart from one another about the circumference of the wall. The inner portions of the strip assemblies engage the outer diameter of a probe and are all sized and shaped to have the same inner radial length. The outer portions of the strip assemblies have at least two different outer radial lengths, where one of the outer portions has an outer radial length longer than any other outer radial portions. The outer radial lengths are selected so that the sonde can be coaxially positioned within the eccentric pipe relative to the outer diameter of eccentric pipe.

Eccentric centralizer

A centralizer for a downhole probe disposed within a pipe, the centralizer having a two spaced apart primary tubular members, each with three or more centralizer strip assemblies spaced circumferentially about the wall of the primary tubular member to form seats at each end of each strip assembly. Each seat is disposed to engage a connecting rod assembly extending between the two spaced apart primary members. Each connecting rod assembly has an inner portion and an outer portion, wherein the inner portions of the connecting rod assemblies engage the outer diameter of a probe and the outer portions of the connecting rod assemblies engage the inner diameter of a pipe.

A centralizer for a downhole probe disposed within a pipe, the centralizer having an elongated, primary tubular member that is polygonal in cross-section such that the wall of the tubular primary tubular member is formed with at least three sides. Each side has two adjacent inwardly extending ridges positioned between two outwardly extending ridges. The inwardly extending ridges each extend inward to an inner diameter to engage the outer diameter of a sonde and the outwardly extending ridges each extend outward to an outer diameter to engage the inner diameter of a pipe.

Disclosed herein are methods and system for formation fluid sampling. In at least some embodiments, the method includes pumping formation fluid from a public flow line of a downhole tool via a private flow line into a detachable sample chamber. The method also includes isolating the private flow line from the public flow line. The method also includes collecting measurements of the formation fluid in the private flow line. The method also includes associating the measurements with the detachable sample chamber.

The steering collar can be positioned on a drilling tool for forming a wellbore. Steering mechanisms for use in RSS systems may be devoid of an elastomeric piston seal. Pistons of the steering mechanisms have a convex cross-section that permit the piston to pivot along with a steering pad while moving laterally or radially along a piston axis defined by a piston bore. Hydraulic pressure may be maintained as the pad is extended since a limited gap size between the piston and the bore may be maintained throughout the motion of the pistons. The pistons may be retained to the steering pad in a T-slot and may be elongated in a direction orthogonal to the axis of the piston bore. A groove may be provided around the piston for a receiving a back-up seal therein. The back-up seal may include wear resistant balls embedded in a matrix, and balls may be preloaded to serve as flow restrictors even when worn.
